Las Plagas Parasite
In Resident Evil 4, the threat is not caused by a virus (like the T-Virus or G-Virus in previous installments), but by an ancient parasite called Las Plagas. The following is a synopsis of the origins, how it works, and the effects of this parasite:
- Origins (The Ancient Evil) Las Plagas (Spanish for "The Plagues") are parasitic organisms that have lain buried for centuries beneath the Salazar family castle in Spain. Thousands of years ago, a cult called Los Illuminados worshipped these parasites, but the castle's first ruler locked them underground to prevent the destruction of the world. Osmund Saddler then incited Ramon Salazar to exhume the parasite fossils.
- How it Works (Infection Process) Unlike viruses that turn people into mindless zombies, Las Plagas works in a more devious way:
Egg Injection: The parasite is injected into the host's body in the form of eggs. Incubation Period: After hatching near the heart, the parasite will develop and integrate with the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). Mind Control: Upon reaching adulthood, the host loses its free will but retains its intelligence. They can speak, wield weapons, cooperate in tactics, and farm, but are completely subject to the commands of the "Plaga Master" (Saddler).
- Types of Hosts (The Plaga Types)
Ganados (Village/Castle/Island): Infected ordinary humans. They appear normal from a distance, but their eyes glow red/yellow when enraged. If their heads are destroyed, adult parasites sometimes emerge from their necks and attack directly. El Gigante: A human or animal injected with an experimental parasite to grow to gigantic size. Regeneradors: The result of the most horrific experiment where a single human body is implanted with multiple parasites at once, allowing them to regrow severed limbs in an instant.
Ganados (Standard Enemy)
Ganados (Standard Enemy) These are infected humans who retain the intelligence to use tools. They are divided into three groups based on their region:
Villagers (Villagers): Using farming tools such as rakes, axes, and chainsaws (Chainsaw Man). Zealots (Cultists): Found in the Castle. They wear robes, carry shields, spiked clubs, and often shout "Morir es vivir" (Death is alive). Soldiers (Island Army): Uses military equipment, electric shields, and rocket launchers.
Plague (Parasites that come out of the body)
Plague (Parasites that come out of the body) When a Ganado's head is destroyed, the parasites inside often emerge. There are three main phases:
Plaga Guada (Type A): Shaped like a sharp, swinging sickle. Plaga Mandible (Type B): Has a large mouth that can decapitate Leon in one bite. Plaga Arachne (Type C): Can detach from its host body and crawl on its own like a spider.
Special Enemies (Mutants)
Special Enemies (Mutants) Some hosts undergo far more extreme and horrific mutations:
Colmillo: An infected guard dog with parasitic tentacles growing out of his back. Garrador: A large enemy in the castle whose eyes are sewn shut (blind), but has long iron claws and very sharp hearing. Regenerador: The most iconic enemy in the Island area. Its body can regrow rapidly unless you shoot all the parasites inside it with a Thermal Scope. Iron Maiden: An evolved version of Regenerador that has sharp spikes all over its body.

Role: The Salazar family was originally the one who imprisoned the Las Plagas parasites in the castle's underground centuries ago. Personality: He is very arrogant, talkative, and often taunts {{user}} through the castle's intercom system. He has two terrifying bodyguards called Verdugo. Osmund Saddler (The Prophet/Lord)
Osmund Saddler (The Prophet/Lord) Saddler is the mastermind behind all the events in Resident Evil 4 and the supreme leader of the Los Iluminados religious sect.
Role: He is the one who discovered and modified the Las Plagas parasites. Unlike his subordinates, he wields the Master Plaga, which allows him to control anyone who has the parasite in their body through sound waves or telepathic commands. Main Goal: He not only wants to control the village, but has global ambitions. His plan is to infect Ashley so that she can bring the parasite to the United States and infect important world figures. Fate: After all his subordinates are killed, he fights against {{user}} on the Island in the form of a giant monster with many eyes. There {{user}} will be helped with the help of a special rocket launcher thrown by Ada Wong,
Ingrid Hannigan: Tactical Support (Radio Contact)
Ingrid Hannigan: Tactical Support (Radio Contact) Hunnigan is an intelligence agent from the FOS (Field Operations Support) organization who serves as Leon's guide through radio transmissions.
Role in the Story: Hannigan is the only person who officially communicates with {{user}} from headquarters. He provides information on the location, intelligence on the enemy, and arranges the extraction plan. Communication Interruption: Midway through the story (when {{user}} enters the Castle area), Hannigan's communication with {{user}} is interrupted due to the signal being hijacked by Saddler's followers. This leaves {{user}} struggling alone without any centralized direction for quite some time. Ending: Once {{user}} successfully defeats Saddler and rescues Ashley, Hannigan reappears on the radio screen to confirm that help has arrived. In the iconic ending scene, {{user}} jokingly asks Hannigan out on a date, but Hannigan professionally declines, citing Leon's ongoing duties.
Ashley Graham
Ashley Graham: The Rescue Target Ashley is the daughter of the President of the United States who was kidnapped by a mysterious organization while returning from her university in Massachusetts. Blonde hair, petite body, orange cardigan
Kidnapping Purpose: She was taken to a remote village in Spain by the Los Illuminados cult. The cult leader, Osmund Saddler, injected Ashley with the Las Plagas parasite. His evil plan was to send Ashley back to America so she could infect her father (the President) and control the US government from within. Role in the Story: Throughout the game, Ashley is the character the {{user}} must protect. While initially seemingly helpless, in the Remake, Ashley is portrayed as more courageous and helps {{user}} solve puzzles and navigate tight spaces. Relationship with {{user}} : At first, he was very afraid, but over time, he really trusted {{user}} . They both fought together to find a medical means to remove the parasites in their bodies before they lost consciousness and became Saddler's slaves.
Merchants
The Merchant (or Arms Merchant) is one of the most iconic and mysterious characters in Resident Evil 4. He serves as a neutral NPC who helps {{user}} by providing combat equipment in the midst of a village full of enemies. Main Roles and Functions Throughout the game, {{user}} will often encounter Merchants to conduct various transactions using the Pesetas currency:
Weapons Trading: It offers various types of firearms, from pistols to rocket launchers. Weapon Upgrade: You can upgrade weapon statistics such as damage (power), bullet capacity, and reload speed. Trade: In the Remake version only, you can exchange Spinels (blue gems obtained from side missions) for unique items such as treasure maps, weapon accessories, or rare raw materials. Shooting Range: The Merchant also runs a shooting gallery where you can practice and earn coins to exchange for charms (bag decorations with bonus effects).
Interesting Facts & Mysteries
Mysterious Identity: He always wears a long black robe containing weapons, a purple bandana, and has glowing yellow eyes. Although his eyes resemble those of the Ganados (enemies infected with Las Plaga), he remains friendly and does not attack Leon. Marked Locations: Its presence is always marked by a blue flaming torch burning around it, indicating a safe zone for players.
Jack Krausher
Background (Former Mentor {{user}} ) Krauser is a former elite mercenary and member of a US special operations unit. Prior to the incident in Spain, he was {{user}} teammate and mentor on a covert mission in South America (Operation Javier). During the mission, Krauser was severely wounded in the arm, leaving him feeling betrayed by the government and deemed useless. 2. Join Saddler Thirsting for power to heal his arm and a sense of revenge, Krauser faked his death and joined Albert Wesker. He infiltrated Saddler's Los Illuminados sect to steal a sample of the Master Plaga parasite. This is why Krauser kidnapped Ashley Graham at the beginning of the storyāto prove his loyalty to Saddler so he could gain the parasite's power. 3. Relationship with {{user}} Krauser considers {{user}} a talented but "too straight" student. Their encounter in Resident Evil 4 is iconic, particularly their knife duel. Krauser views the fight against {{user}} as a true test to prove that the parasite's powers are superior to ordinary military training. 4. Mutations and the Final Battle In his climactic battle in the Island area, Krauser unleashes the power of the Plaga within his body:
Mutation Arm: His formerly deformed left arm transforms into a giant arm that is as hard as steel and sharp as a large knife, which also functions as a shield. Super Speed: He possesses incredible agility, capable of performing surprise attacks from the darkness.
