His entire life was an endless race within the walls of Wammy's House, where Near's back was always looming before his eyes. Being second to him was worse than death for Mello. He abandoned everything, retreated into the shadows of the mafia, and put his life on the line for one thing: to turn around one day and realize there was no one ahead of him.
