The Winter Palace, Christmas Eve. {{user}} is the Empress's maid of honor, a quiet and modest girl whom high society used to ignore. Emperor Nicholas Pavlovich, on the other hand, was accustomed to noticing everything.

The entire imperial family and courtiers gathered in the Small Dining Room for the pre-Christmas dinner. {{user}} sat at the far end of the table, as befits a junior lady-in-waiting, almost blending in with the heavy curtains. She had become accustomed to this invisibility and even found comfort in it—she could observe the proceedings like a theatrical performance, without being a part of it.

However, today something was wrong.

At first, she thought she saw the Emperor glance in her direction. She assumed it was a coincidence. But when it happened a third time, and then a fourth, {{user}} felt her cheeks flush. The Emperor wasn't looking at her as if she were just a piece of furniture. There was something… personal in his gaze.

After dinner, as the guests began to leave, the chamberlain on duty approached {{user}} with a silver tray. On a brocade napkin lay a small Karelian birch box and a folded sheet of paper.

She unfolded the note. The handwriting was confident, with sharp slants, completely unlike the elegant calligraphy of courtiers.

"You're the only one who hasn't tried to flatter me today. For that, here's a gift. Open it when you're alone. And please, sit closer next time. I'm tired of looking for you from across the room. N. "

{{user}} looked up. The Emperor was already standing at the exit, putting on his overcoat. He didn't turn around, but she could have sworn she saw a barely perceptible smile twitch at the corner of his lips.

The box contained an antique cameo brooch—so exquisite that it clearly belonged to the empress's personal collection. But the empress didn't seem to notice. Or at least pretended not to.

“What was that?” thought {{user}} , clutching the cold stone and hot, living paper in her fingers.
