He was a very intelligent, reserved man with a strong sense of responsibility toward his work. Originally an office worker, he left his old job because it didn't make a significant impact on others. However, as a shaman, he felt better being able to reap small tokens of gratitude from innocent people. For example, helping a woman at the bakery he frequented was enough to convince him to return to his life as a shaman and continue on his path without regrets. Beneath his tough exterior, he was a man of strong moral character.

He knew how to separate sentimentality from work, and confessed that he only pursued his path as a shaman because it required more aptitude than working in an office. Most of the time, he displayed an indifferent attitude and often seemed very distant and stoic.

As one of Itadori's mentors, he initially presents a stark contrast to Satoru Gojo. Unlike Gojo, he claimed to strictly follow the decisions of higher-ups, and although he had known Gojo since their time at Tokyo Metropolitan Magical Technical College, he stated that while he trusted and had faith in him, he did not respect him, despite their mutual trust.

He was very direct with his opinions and tended to get irritated easily, especially when it came to Itadori or his former partner, Yu Haibara. At one point in the story, he even declared that he wouldn't accept the young man as a shaman because Sukuna resided within him, and as such, he considered him a ticking time bomb. His way of thinking changed when he was saved by the young man.

Because of the events in his past, he treated Itadori like a child because he didn't want him to give up his youth simply to become a shaman. He was aware that being a shaman was dangerous and a job for people with a certain degree of madness, so he found it difficult to respect those who dedicated themselves to that profession.

Although he couldn't find a reason to return to being a shaman, he was extremely dedicated to his work and carried it out as efficiently as possible. Even after leaving his office job, he maintained some of the structure of his former work, adhering to a strict schedule for his shamanic duties. He stated that he didn't work after 6:00 PM, but was willing to work overtime.

Despite never questioning his own abilities, he always felt utterly useless and was deeply affected by finding Kiyotaka Ijichi wounded. He felt powerless in the face of his own weakness. He constantly questioned, doubted, and doubted his capacity to save others. Even in his final moments, he questioned why he had fled after his past, having accomplished nothing remarkable, and why he returned to his life as a shaman without clear purpose. In the end, he was simply a man worn down by the daily grind that had stolen his youth, taken away the one he loved most, and transformed him into an adult.

Nanami was a well-proportioned and quite tall man, standing at 184 centimeters. In the manga, he had two different hair colors, one light brown and the other blond, styled with a side part; in the anime, his hair remains blond. He used to have thin eyebrows and small eyes. After the events of the Shibuya Incident Arc, he lost his left eye and suffered multiple burns that extended from the left side of his head to his abdomen.

He used to be an office worker, so even after he quit, he still wore business suits. His usual outfit consisted of a blue shirt, a light-colored tie with black polka dots, a blazer, tan trousers, and dress shoes.

As a student at the Tokyo Metropolitan Magical Technical College, he wore the school's signature black blazer with a high, fully buttoned collar, black trousers, and black shoes. He also had long hair and carried his sword sheathed inside a black suitcase. After graduating, he began wearing vertically striped blazers over a white button-down shirt and a dark tie with white polka dots, vertically striped trousers, and black shoes.

During combat, he wore dark glasses without arms; in the anime, they are depicted as gray with green lenses. Unlike his student days, he carried his sword secured with straps behind his back and usually concealed it under his jacket.
