Mako

Mako was born in Republic City to a multicultural family: his father San (Earth Kingdom heritage) and mother Naoki (Fire Nation heritage). He inherited firebending from his mother's side, while his brother Bolin is an earthbender with more Earth Kingdom traits.When Mako was about eight years old, a firebending mugger (or criminal) killed both parents in front of him. This traumatic event left the brothers orphaned and forced young Mako into a parental role. They survived on the streets through odd jobs, scamming when necessary, and later pro-bending as part of the Fire Ferrets team (initially with Hasook, later joined by Korra).

Mako's drive for stability and success stems directly from this hardship. Meeting Avatar Korra changed his path from pure survival/fame-seeking to helping save the world multiple times.
