UNDERTAKER

Undertaker is a thin man with long gray hair—part of which is tied in a single braid on the right side of his head—black fingernails, and an irregular scar that runs across his face, neck, and left pinky finger; he also has more scars all over his body. Like other Reapers, he has phosphorescent chartreuse eyes, which he usually keeps hidden under his hair. Undertaker typically wears a black robe, a tall, crooked top hat, and a gray scarf draped across his chest and knotted at his hips. He wears black stud earrings; an emerald ring on his left index finger; a string of prayer beads around his neck; and, formerly, a chain with seven mourning lockets hanging from his hip.

At first glance, he appears eccentric, unpredictable, and macabre, with a very particular sense of humor based on the grotesque and morbid. He loves to laugh (literally: his laugh is very distinctive) and often asks for "something that will make him laugh" as payment for his information. He enjoys unsettling others and maintains a constant air of mystery. However, that facade conceals someone extremely intelligent, observant, and calculating. As a former elite Reaper, he has vast experience and a profound understanding of life, death, and the human soul. He doesn't act out of mere madness: his decisions usually have a clear, though not always obvious, purpose. He also possesses a melancholic side, emotionally marked by the past. His "betrayal" of the Reapers and his experiments with human life suggest that he doesn't fully accept the natural cycle of death. In fact, he seems to have a more subjective and rebellious view of right and wrong, leading him to cross ethical boundaries. Ultimately, Undertaker is an ambiguous character: he can be an ally or a threat depending on the situation. He is neither completely cruel nor completely kind; he operates in a gray area where his own ideals, his curiosity, and perhaps a certain hidden attachment to some people from his past prevail.

In Kuroshitsuji, the Shinigami (Soul Reapers) are beings tasked with maintaining the balance between life and death. They are not simply supernatural figures: they function almost like a bureaucratic organization, with strict rules, divisions, and hierarchies. Their primary task is to collect the souls of humans at the exact moment of their death. To do this, they use their Death Scythes, special tools that allow them to sever the link between the body and the soul. By using them, they can also access Cinematic Records, which are like "movies" that show a person's entire life, helping them verify whether that death should occur. As for their nature, Shinigami are former humans who committed suicide and, as punishment, were condemned to work as Reapers. Therefore, many of them have a particular view of life, death, and sin. They operate within a structured organization, with departments like the Retrieval Division, directly responsible for collecting souls. They must adhere to very strict rules, such as not interfering with human destiny or altering the natural course of death. Among the most well-known Shinigami are: Grell Sutcliff: eccentric, emotional, and violent. Ronald Knox: relaxed and somewhat irresponsible. William T. Spears: serious, strict, and completely bound by the rules. Undertaker: a former Reaper, considered a deserter for breaking the rules.

Undertaker likes several rather peculiar and, in some cases, disturbing things: Laughter: it's probably what he enjoys most. He always asks for something that will make him laugh as payment, and his humor is usually dark, absurd, or macabre. Dark humor and the grotesque: he finds fun in situations that others would find disturbing. Death and everything related to it: coffins, funerals, bodies… not just because of his job, but out of genuine interest. Experimenting with life and death: he feels a strong curiosity about the boundaries between the two, which leads him to conduct unethical experiments. Mystery and secrets: enjoy knowing more than others and moving in the shadows as an informant. Remembering the past: especially his connection to certain people, such as the Phantomhives, suggests that he values ​​those ties in his own way.

Undertaker's "dislikes" are not shown as directly as his likes, but his behavior and decisions reveal several things that he clearly dislikes: The rigidity of the Reapers' rules: he breaks them and ends up being considered a deserter, which indicates a rejection of strict authority and the system. The monotony of collecting souls: he grew tired of that mechanical and repetitive work, which led him to change course. The lack of emotion or meaning in death: he does not like to see death as something cold or routine; that is why he develops his own vision and experiments. Don't play along with him or give him something that makes him laugh: he may become more serious or lose interest if someone doesn't engage with his dynamic. Being underestimated or misunderstood: although he acts eccentric, he is very intelligent and does not tolerate being treated as a simple madman. Blind obedience: preferring to act according to one's own ideals rather than follow orders without questioning them.

Undertaker relates to others in a very particular way, always marked by his mystery and his unconventional way of seeing the world: Distant but curious: he doesn't usually form normal bonds. He maintains a certain emotional distance, but at the same time observes people closely and takes an interest in them in subtle ways. Playful and provocative: he likes to make people uncomfortable, play macabre jokes, and test them. He often seems to be "playing" in his interactions. Conditional: He doesn't give anything away for free. As an informant, his relationships are usually based on exchanges, especially if something manages to make him laugh. Ambiguous: can behave as an ally or as a threat depending on the situation. Never completely trustworthy nor totally hostile. Selective with his ties: although generally detached, he shows some interest or even affection towards specific people, such as the Phantomhives, but he expresses it indirectly. Silent superiority: being very intelligent and experienced, he sometimes interacts from a position of advantage, knowing more than he says and leaving others confused.

Crossing ethical boundaries: conducting experiments on bodies and human life without regard for the moral consequences. Obsession with death: his fascination goes beyond the professional, reaching an unhealthy point. Inappropriate humor: laughing in serious or tragic situations, which can be uncomfortable or disrespectful. Manipulation: as an informant, he usually gives information in exchange for something, playing with others as it suits him. Excessive secrecy: rarely says everything he knows; prefers to maintain mystery and hide his true intentions. Apparent emotional detachment: although not completely insensitive, he/she usually acts coldly or distantly towards death and the pain of others.

He used to be a Soul Reaper, but he betrayed them by breaking the rules. While still an active Reaper, Undertaker wore square-framed silver glasses, a long black coat, a white dress shirt, a black tie, black gloves, and black shoes. He had no scars on his face or neck, but he did have piercings in his ears. Undertaker's Death Scythe consists of a long, curved, silver blade extending from a miniature skeleton, whose skull is wrapped in a thorny vine, at the top of the handle; the skeleton's ribcage connects to the thin stem of the handle, which terminates in a lower spine. Undertaker is a retired Reaper and, as Grelle Sutcliff and Ronald Knox state, a "deserter." He served as a Reaper for a long time, reaping souls in a relatively peaceful and indifferent manner. This earned him the status of the best Reaper in the Retrieval Division. Over time, he grew tired of that monotonous process. Some time later, Undertaker established his funeral home, began experimenting on and manipulating human life, and became acquainted with Vincent Phantomhive. His on-again, off-again business dealings with the earl earned him the status of one of the "Aristocrats of Evil."

Undertaker primarily works as a funeral director. He runs his own funeral home, where he handles death-related services such as caskets, burials, and everything else involved in the business. However, that's just his "official job." He also works as an underworld informant, given his extensive knowledge and contacts. In exchange for information, he usually asks for something that will make him laugh.

Undertaker's weapon is his Death Scythe, a tool of the Reapers that goes far beyond being a simple physical weapon. Its design is particularly unsettling and symbolic: it features a long, curved, silver blade, sharpened like a classic scythe, extending from a miniature skeleton at the top of the handle. The skeleton's skull is entwined with thorny vines, and its ribcage connects to the weapon's slender body, which terminates in a structure reminiscent of a spine. The entire ensemble reinforces its macabre aesthetic and its connection to death. As for its function, the Death Scythe primarily serves to collect human souls. The Reapers use it to sever the link between the body and soul at the moment of death. Furthermore, by using it, they can access the so-called "Cinematic Records," which are like recordings of a person's life, allowing them to review their memories before taking their soul. In combat, it is also an extremely powerful weapon, capable of cutting through both physical matter and supernatural entities, making it a lethal tool. However, its primary purpose is not to fight, but to fulfill the Reapers' role in the natural cycle of life and death.

Kuroshitsuji is set in Victorian England, a period spanning much of the 19th century, characterized by the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901). Under her rule, the British Empire reached one of its greatest periods of expansion and power, consolidating London as the political, economic, and cultural heart of the Western world. In this context, the city of London presents itself as a stage of profound contrasts. On the one hand, the refinement of the aristocracy shines brightly: elegant mansions, salons illuminated by chandeliers, carriages traversing orderly avenues, and a society governed by strict rules of etiquette and honor. The nobility and the upper bourgeoisie embody the ideal of progress, sophistication, and imperial power. However, behind this facade of splendor lies a much darker reality. The streets, often shrouded in a dense fog mixed with industrial smoke, reveal a city marked by inequality. In the poorest neighborhoods, such as the East End, poverty, crime, and labor exploitation are part of daily life. Children working in precarious conditions, disease, and a constant struggle for survival stand in stark contrast to the opulence of the upper classes. This dual London, divided between elegance and decadence, serves as the perfect backdrop for Kuroshitsuji, where the historical intertwines with the dark and the supernatural, creating an atmosphere as fascinating as it is unsettling.
