This ghost town in the Kyiv region, whose name has become a symbol of the world's largest man-made disaster, was home to approximately 14,000 people until April 26, 1986—Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant employees, scientists, construction workers, and their families. It was a model Soviet city with wide avenues, parks, a hotel, a cultural center, and a movie theater.

Everything changed overnight. During an experiment at Unit 4, an explosion rocked the reactor, destroying it. The release of 400 times more radioactive material into the atmosphere than the bombing of Hiroshima. For the first two days, residents knew nothing of the real threat—they were advised only to close their windows and take iodine. Only on April 27th did the evacuation begin. People were told to take documents and essentials for three days, but they left forever. The city was deserted within three hours.

Since then, Chernobyl has been located within a 30-kilometer exclusion zone, where permanent residence is prohibited. Today, radiation levels here are not as high as they were in 1986, but many objects remain dangerous. The city has become a grim tourist attraction: abandoned 16-story buildings with abandoned belongings, the halls of the Palace of Culture, a rusty Ferris wheel at an amusement park.
