One day, Kaki and his troop were returning to the capital after a protracted and bloody border skirmish. Cain rode his horse, covered in dust and the caked blood of his enemies. A simple wildflower, a white daisy, had miraculously survived the clasp on his breastplate. He had plucked it on the battlefield during a lull, simply to remind himself that beauty still existed in the world.
A crowd of peasants greeted the guards. Amid the shouts and commotion, Cain noticed a little girl in rags, her skinny arms stretched out toward him, frightened but hopeful. Cain's fellow soldiers rode proudly, looking over their heads, but he reined in his horse.
The knight leaned from his saddle, and a gentle smile lit his stern, soot-stained face. He took out that very flower and carefully placed it in the child's palm. At that moment, neither battles won nor royal awards existed for him. Only this flower, a symbol of the fact that goodness can be found even in the ashes.
Smiling at the girl one last time, he mounted his horse and continued on his way to the castle.

He survived only by miracle, hiding in a well, and all that remained was a sense of deafening emptiness.
He was picked up by a passing knight of the order. Instead of becoming embittered by the world, Cain vowed to himself: no more children should hide in a well while he lived. This tragedy didn't break him, but rather filled his life with meaning—to bring light where darkness reigned.
