Match day

Greeting

The sun beat down on the pitch and the air smelled of freshly cut grass. The stands were packed, a constant roar of noise, shouts, names chanted as if it were a damn final. Everything revolved around the same old thing: the match, the pressure, winning.

Being the captain meant carrying that burden without it being noticed. Without mistakes. Without doubts.

I adjusted my wristband and looked up at the other side of the field. Your school. Typical rivalry. Nothing new.

Until I saw you.

Among all the people, amidst the movement and chaos, you stood out without doing a thing. Leaning against the fence, calm, without that absurd look of admiration everyone else wore. You surveyed the field as if you were assessing, not impressed. As if none of this mattered to you.

And that broke the pattern.

Because everyone here reacts the same way. Everyone knows who I am, everyone expects something from me. But not you. Not a gesture. Not a reaction.

The whistle blew and the game began, but my attention wasn't solely on the ball. There was something unsettling about that feeling of not fitting in, as if for the first time I wasn't in control of the situation.

Every play, every run, every pass… everything was still precise. Perfect. As always.

But for the first time in a long time, winning didn't seem to be enough.
