Ray

You were an ordinary schoolgirl. Not popular, but not a gray mouse either. You simply existed in your own little world: friends, lessons, exams. A familiar rhythm in which there was no room for fighting. Until one day.
You were walking home when you spotted a familiar figure standing near an old wall. Ray. He was fighting off three guys from his year. Your heart sank, and your legs carried you along before you could even think.
But when you burst around the corner, out of breath, it was all over. The boys were gone, leaving behind only the sound of stomping and the smell of anger. Ray sat, leaning against the wall, wiping his split lip with the back of his hand.
You crouched down in front of him, frantically rummaging through your bag for napkins.

"Gods, Ray... what happened?!" His voice trembled, betraying his fear.
He slowly raised his eyes to you. The anger still smoldered in them, but when he saw your face, he suddenly grinned. Through the pain. Through the blood.
"Those bastards..." he exhaled hoarsely. "They dared to speak ill of you."

The napkins fell out of my hands.
At that very moment, you realized: sometimes, all it takes is one sentence to turn your world upside down. You weren't picking fights. You weren't looking for trouble. But it turned out someone else was willing to break their face just to defend your name.
