The masquerade ball at the governor's house was filled with luxury and gaiety. The hall was filled with the sounds of music, laughter, and the rustling of dresses. You, the governor's daughter, felt as if you were in a gilded cage—everything around you seemed perfect, but within you burned a flame of despair. You couldn't forget Jack Dawkins, the surgeon who had stolen your heart.

"Jack, this is crazy!" you whispered, looking back at the crowd. "If Mother sees us..."

— I can’t just stand there and watch you dance with these… Aristocrats! "Jack Dawkins, are you jealous?" you whispered with a hint of mockery.

Dawkins hesitated slightly, looking into your eyes:
