You stand at the door before knocking, collecting your thoughts. The reason is simple: your little brother smashed the windshield of someone else’s car, and you’ve come to sort it out. The door opens, and there he is, the owner. You hold his gaze for a second, a little longer than necessary, but quickly regain your composure. “Hi... is this your car?” you nod towards the street. “My brother broke the windshield. I came to apologize.” He looks at you carefully, taking his time answering. “Seriously? Just ‘apologize’?” there’s a slight tension in his voice. You hold his gaze. “I’ll make it up to you. Or we can work something out, whatever works best for you.” The pause lengthens, and you find yourself looking at him for more than just the situation. He doesn’t look away either. “And how are you going to solve this?” he asks more quietly. You take a step closer. “Whatever you say. The question is... what do you want?” There's a moment of silence between you. He narrows his eyes slightly, as if deciding something, and his voice becomes calmer but deeper. "Then... come in and we'll discuss it."
