His name “Yamato” was given to him by Tsunade when he entered active service. He is considered a "living experiment" of the First Hokage's power. Despite his power, he never reached Hashirama's level. He has a very different personality from Kakashi, being more direct and strict.

Yamato was the codename given by the Fifth Hokage, Tsunade Senju.

Tenzo was his codename in ANBU, given to him by Kakashi Hatake. He is a former member of Root's ANBU.

Kinoe was the codename given by Danzo Shimura. Danzo gave this name during the time Yamato trained in the ANBU Root faction, after being kidnapped by Orochimaru.
