Guts and Blackpowder
· Atmosphere and Setting: The action takes place against the backdrop of real historical locations such as the Siege of San Sebastián, the Battle of Leipzig, or the Paris Catacombs. Instead of a typical virus, the cause of the dead rising is something supernatural: according to the game's lore, Hell ran out of room for sinners, and their souls are possessing their own dead bodies. This gives the events a dark, almost religious undertone.

Lore:
The Blight, also known as The Pestilence; a supernatural, almost endless wave of undead corpses who come back from the dead.
The dead can be resurrected to join the horde, even without physical infection, they only need a few dozen undead comrades to rise from their graves. Skeletal or burned corpses cannot be resurrected.
The undead have staggering amounts of motor functions, being able to sprint, even days after their passing, surpassing that of a regular fellow due to their lack of needing stamina. Whilst being as strong as a sailor, due to their brain not holding back their strength. The dead do not rot, they trap the soul of the living in a body that was once theirs.
The Blight has 3 stages of infection:
Virality: A newly turned fellow, retaining his motor functions to the fullest. Being able to sprint—that of a slow gallop of a horse. Tackling the nearest non-infected individual at full force, resorting to holding the poor fellow's mouth open and vomiting it's guts into the stomach to spread the infection. During the stage of virality, the body retains it's muscle memory.
False Rotting: After a week, slow signs of "rot" appears. The glow of bloodshot eyes dimming, as their sprint slowly turn into a shamble. While they appear weaker, the amount of blood that pile onto them harden, slowing them down. Whilst increasing their strength twelvefold, with one being able to break down a door by himself.
Resurrection: If a revenant of The Blight "dies" or hasn't seen combat in a week, it gets dragged into the Earth; before rising from soft ground and graveyards which make large noise. Their numbers never dent, they only swell.
The dead act... Somewhat cannibalistic, while they do not starve or thirst, they still hunger for human flesh.

"DESTRUCTION OF THE CRUZIER
The 8th of July, 1815
The Danish City of Copenhagen had capitulated leaving no choice for the Royal Navy, but to take action. Swedish pressure over the concerns of Denmark & her neighbors had cause to move the Royal Fleet to the Baltic Sea. By the third of July it was all but apparent Copenhagen would fall to the Blight. A blockade under the command of Admiral James Gambier would respond to the harbors of Copenhagen by July Seventh. By the eighth it was deemed no living soul could endure the conditions brought upon the blight & it'd be better to destroy the dead inside.
By the later hours of the seventh sloops protected the harbors from the escape of the afflicted. Afflicted Danish soldiers aboard a small vessel took the opportunity to fire upon a brig-sloop. The guns aboard were unable to fire low enough to hit the scourged gunboat, however a valiant effort was made. With the most misfortune a cannon ball struck her magazine sending her & her men to fiery & watery graves. Survivors aboard her totalled none, while the rouge gunboat escaped the fleet. Little is know of the fate, but it's commonly accepted the ship floundered before it could afflict the blight elsewhere.
The ship herself was recalled to service after demand of a naval blockade of the British Isles in late 1813. She was to be laid up & retired in September of 1815. Now she rests at the bottom of the harbor fulfilling her service to guard the harbor."

Our office which is upon Whitehall street down from HORSEGUARDS, gives quite the witness to the bustling military business.
As of the news citywide unrest has occurred. Riots are being dispersed by soldiers with shot. Great deals of destruction of property has occurred in Saint Giles, Southwark, Westminster, Ludgate. The military is working quickly to quell such and ask us to warn trouble makers who choose to exploit the chaos. Citizens of good nature are asked to stay indoors. | September 10th-11th, 1815 | London, United Kingdom
In the wake of the fall of northern France two months prior, various reports of the Blight began to appear across the British Isles in cities such as Plymouth, Edinburgh, and Southend. Although it is unknown how exactly the Blight managed to get there, it can be assumed that it was the result of contaminated shipping. In order to halt the impeding threat, the British Government would establish martial law within London, although this would prove unpopular as riots and violent skirmishes would soon erupt throughout the city, and vandalism and robbery would be widespread. By the time the Blight reached London, military order had dissolved and many commanders had already fled to their estates.
A multitude of newspapers, letters, and notes can be found in both London and Westminster.

Additionally, a bloody note can be found next to the mauled corpse of a French Cuirassier;

Following the French evacuation from Paris, American Ambassador William H. Crawford sends a letter to the United States requesting his evacuation from France. Upon receiving the letter, the United States dispatches the USS Constitution to extract Crawford. Crawford is brought to Roscoff by the French Army, which fortifies the city. A garrison is stationed at the church and takes Crawford to the attic of a nearby farmhouse.
At some point shortly prior to the arrival of the U.S. Marines, the undead breach the cities defenses and overrun it, killing the majority of the French forces and forcing the rest to retreat into hiding. In response to the developing situation, the British deploy an Expeditionary Force to Roscoff to prevent any infected from breaching the shoreline and threatening the British mainland. With severe distrust sewn between French and British forces following the British retreat from Waterloo, the French Army takes members of the Expeditionary Force prisoner and kills several of them.
Under the cover of fog, the USS Constitution sneaks past the British Quarantine of Europe and successfully docks in the harbor of Roscoff. The garrisoned forces at the Church retreat into the catacombs underneath the church, preparing to be overrun by the British Expeditionary Forces while the Scared French Soldier holds back the U.S. Marines outside, believing them to be British Forces. A large portion of the forces retreating through the Catacombs are slaughtered in their retreat.

After all of our means our defense has become insufficient. If now are to have eyes on this print our city is at war with the sygdom. The military is appropriately organizing and providing a defense and counter force against the undead hordes. The unpredictable consequences of the sygdom will be dealt with. If you are a male fit and prepared for combat make your way to your nearest national guard rallying point. There you shall be armed and join together with forces to liberate Copenhagen. If you are not of national guard material, remain inside barricade your home. Do not seek outside contact, avoid cemeteries and other burial sites. Remain quiet. Ration food. The military and national guard troops are coming for you. Do not be discouraged. This print has been pre-arranged for such an event. It is to be distributed evenly throughout the city.
It is obliged that all of you maintain a state of law. It is your duty as citizens to maintain order and respect of fellow citizen's property. I should warn everyone that violation of this duty is a crime that could have dire consequences.

This, is the account.
The dead do not sleep, they are relentless, you can out march them, but they will make the ground while you rest. Their hunger does not stop them. They are beasts, cannibals, monsters, all words fall pail to describe. We were positioned near Brussels. We were to hold a mound of ground. Mont Saint Jean. Before long we were ordered to march toward the farmhouse of Hougoumont, but such orders we cancelled. Such a forsaken fate was avoided. Later we would come to learn all souls positioned at these farms would meet their fates. We instead were positioned near the English Line. Rain poured the evening of Saturday. The roads turned to mud quickly, and the fields of grass even worse. Our first encounter with the dead was on the evening of the 17th, a day earlier than any dragoons reported. The first assault was held with little death, however their numbers did not dwindle, but rather they continued to grow. By nine o'clock our line had retreated many times. Men were lost to the dead every hour. One would simply lose his balance in the mud, and quite quickly the dead would gather around him and feast upon him. His screams would ring, but no soul would make forth to save him for it would be in vain. By what must've been midnight the English, such cowards abandoned our forces. The full brunt of the dead they had held back struck us and we were forced to retreat. Farms such as Hougoumont provided us our only life line. The men there had assembled fires to burn the dead like moths to a light. The maneuver worked and provided us cover to retreat, however as I neared them screams could be heard from behind their walls. The unusual fire behind those walls soon followed suit, and what must've been two o'clock the fire extinguished. The English left us all to perish. Foul play was suspected in our ranks...

Karl Dahl They deny the sygdom has touched our soil. As if the silk of our red and white flag hasn't been stained by the scourge of Europe. Forbid you fall into a man in denial. Look at the blood that stains the walls, no other disease, plague, scourge, does such! This disease has reached Norge, ravaged and tore through Vardo, and now we drag back a ship full of the dead who fell to such Sygdom. Might I remind you such a disease that simply raises those already deceased. If this ship is to arrive in harbor it will spend the end of our fatherland. I believe the smell of the dead alone awakens those buried away in the cemeteries. This is the end of Denmark. I urge citizens to deny entry to this ship. The dead aboard, they'll kill us all regardless if they're not wandering. This disease reached Vardo, devastated her, and now will feast upon Copenhagen. Bless you all best of luck to you.
Some readers may find it quiet disturbing or uneducated to read the foolish opinion of Mr Dahl, but his theory has brought lunatics to take up arms against the aforementioned ship. Royal Guards are expected to quell such a distasteful revolt!

Northern Recovery Kirkenes, Norge, June 7th. Account of investigation of and recovery of Vardohus.
Our journey began in the naval yard. We bid farewell to Copenhagen. We arrived at the small island of Vardo on the 3rd of April. Communication with the fortress and island had been lost since Christmas of 1812. On the island we found not a living soul. Complete desolation. The long decayed bodies of few were recovered, by then frozen and thawed multiple times. Most peculiar of all was a body frozen in the ice of the sea. Its eyes were peeled open, those eyes moved, the limbs were frozen over, but the eyes moved. Long dried blood stained many walls. A train of military equipment lined the ground from the fort to the docks. What events transpired here are un-

Two boats involved in the recovery and investigation of Vardohus F. arrived a quarter past seven this Friday evening. Onboard the ship is vital evidence in piecing the events that transpired at the ill-fated fortress. Along with the first bodies recovered. The soldier's remains are to be laid to rest in Assistens cemetery. Ceremonies will be held respectively on the 5th of July. Surgeons, doctors, physicians, and so called Sygdom experts attempt to bring light to the mystery on Vardo. Two such theories we have the pleasure of displaying.
Dr Johann Berling I myself have viewed the recordings and findings of those far up north. Many are quick to point their fingers to the Sygdom, but I assure you, by no means could at is have traveled to such remoteness. No case of the Sygdom could transmit itself across oceans. This poor air theory is total non-sense, as if we are living through the bubonic plague! Our knowledge has greatly expanded, no plague travels from air!

A quote from the English Diplomat Augustus Foster. "All nations of Europe are to provide sacrifice for the liberation of Europe. Denmark must provide sacrifice to rid this scourge!"
French Empire has finalized agreements to deploy forces to the Danevirke. In response the king is to allow the French to stage positions on the north sea, in order to reinforce or perhaps extract those under siege in Hamburg. Danish forces defend the city as well so such common interest has merited this measure.
Danevirke Fortifications remain standing, only two breaches were reported as of the last issue. Large groups of Sygdom sufferers are congregated south of the town of Slesvig. Residents have been urged to prepare to evacuate but as of printing their is believed to be no known cases of breaches or symptoms of the Sygdom. The Danewerk 2 wall which fell only days ago continues to be overrun. Only now are we beginning to face the reality of loss of life. A full list of those believed to have fell can be found on page 5.

Fall of Königsberg Residents and the king of Prussia find themselves without a capital. Retrieved sources can confirm the extraction of King Frederick and the royal family. Their speculated destination is London. This fall marks the second capital of Prussia to be lost, only two years ago did the fall of Berlin occur, only months after the Battle and Fall of Leipzig refugees have arrived in droves to the Slesvig line. No information has surfaced regarding the fate of the nation, but with the knowledge previously gathered we may speculate the nation joins as one of the many to capitulate from the scourge of the Sygdom. Just months ago the forces of Prussia pledged troops to the cause in northwestern France, now the streets of Berlin and Konigsberg ring eerily silent with only the moans of the dead to accompany it.
In Brussels this weekend a new agreement was forged, much to the disconnect of Bonaparte. Forces of the United Kingdom are to mobilize and provide aid to the France in return of the formation of a new country encompassing much of Dutch territories held by the French Empire. These territories are to unite as a Sovereign nation known as the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Although such an agreement leaves an English pawn on France's doorstep, many believe the English's involvement are necessary for the survival of France.

January 5th, 1812; I have to report the Janissaries have taken quite ill. The disease proves fatal. Infact it almost burns faster through their rank than it can spend. The rumors are terrible boils, fever, & death. My colleagues speculate the pestilence. The ranks have taken quite the liking to it, comparing it to Divine Wrath smiting down the Ottoman hordes. However if this was to spread to the center of the army, it'd bring disaster.
April 29th, 1812; The disease has ripped through our ranks, my hypothesis is miasma. Those who've taken ill have so far been regulated to the scraps of the common ranks. A toll of ten for now. It almost bites through men faster than it can bring terror. Those unlucky five were left to perish in the road. I treated the final soul. He reported to me heavy fever, but visions of horror terror. He never perished, but I could no longer feel his pulse. His eyes moved for hours. His suffering was put to end through musket shot.
May 10th, 1812; The disease has been left behind the border.
November 2nd, 1812; The findings are indescribable. Those afflicted no longer suffer, they seek to bring suffering. A violence afflicts them, unfathomable. Two of my men have been lost now. As The Blight begins to become an active threat and rip across Europe, Russian Army Command continues to pursue Napoleon, ignoring the undead threat and proclaiming it to be a "small disease" out of Moscow. Russian Soldiers stationed at St. Petersburg became increasingly concerned throughout October 1813 as undead near the gates of the city and gradually overrun Russian forces domestically. Russian forces are able to consistently lead The Blight away from the city for a period of several months.
In May of 1814, the prevalence of the Zombie threat can no longer be ignored by Russian forces, and Prince Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly answers the pleas of forces stationed at St. Petersburg by arranging for a defense. The city is fortified with garrisons positioned over various defensible positions with as much ammunition as possible, and using flags to signal each-other. On May 18th, a forceful evacuation of civilians from St. Petersburg began using all available means; with fishing vessels and civilian bulks being used to help civilians over long distances, and the rest traveling by foot. Several days later, the Blight reaches St. Petersburg and invades the city.

I write this note with the belief I’ll be dead by tomorrow. I don’t plan to desert, I’m tired of running. I will defend this village with my life, and surely we’ll all fall.
