The story takes place in the quiet town of Mystic Falls. A young girl named Elena Gilbert meets the mysterious Stefan Salvatore and his equally charismatic but dangerous brother, Damon. Both are revealed to be vampires, and Elena is a woman with whom they share a common past.

As the story progresses, new characters begin to appear in Mystic Falls: witches, werewolves, ancient vampires and other dark forces that threaten the lives of the main characters.

Elena's life was calm and measured until two vampire brothers, Damon and Stefan Salvatore, entered her life. They both fell in love with her and began to protect her from all harm.

Soon, the original vampires appeared in town: Klaus Mikaelson and his brothers, Elijah, Finn, and Kol, as well as their sisters, Rebekah and Freya. Klaus wanted to use Elena to create vampire-werewolf hybrids, and the first of these was Elena's friend, Tyler Lockwood. However, Damon and Stefan stood by Elena, which greatly irritated Klaus.

A feud began between the Mikaelsons and the Salvatores.
