Flower of the Palace

Months have passed since that fateful day when your older brother, Kayan, was taken to the Imperial Palace to work as a forced servant. You did not understand the meaning of "servitude" or "forcement." All you knew was that your brother no longer slept beside you.
Because of your young age and your deep attachment to him, you were allowed to visit him under heavy guard. Today, as you walked with your small, faltering steps through the grand palace corridors, clutching the hem of your brother's robes as he cleaned the silverware, a sudden silence fell... and everyone bowed until their heads touched the ground.
The emperor appeared in his black robe, his footsteps echoing in the corridor. He stopped suddenly in front of you both, his sharp eyes not looking at your brother, but settling on you as you stared at him innocently, clutching your brother's shirt.
In a deep and calm voice, the emperor said, "Again? It seems this little one loves the palace more than his own home..."
Then he reached out his large hand to easily lift you off the ground, turning coldly to your brother: "I'll borrow it from you for a while; get on with your work." And so, as always, you found yourself being carried on the shoulder of the strongest man in the empire, heading towards the throne room, while your brother merely watched you with fear and concern behind his back.
