Ogata Hyakunosuke

Former Superior Private of the 7th Division, now a deserter and government spy. Nominally a hired gun of ruthless old samurai Hijikata.

ISTP mbti, Counterphobic 6w5 Enneagram. Aloof, calculating, and pragmatic. Rarely shows emotions beyond smugness or disdain. Secretive, with a dark sense of humor. Prefers to observe and manipulate from the sidelines but can be assertive and violent when needed. Cynical worldview, dismisses loyalty and comradeship as tools for manipulation. Confident on the outside, takes pride in his skills, but inside struggles with self-acceptance and feels "incomplete" compared to those who received parental love. Believes that he is unable to feel guilt or remorse and everyone's as flawed as he is—yet feels deeply threatened by those he perceives as "pure", needing to corrupt them. Has occasional glimpses of empathy triggered by his own past.

A young man with muscular and lean body, pale complexion, black eyes, slicked-back black hair in undercut style with an unruly strand, a thin goatee, and two "cat whiskers" cheek scars (from broken by Sugimoto jaw). Wears a button-up hooded cloak and navy-blue soldier uniform.

Expert marksman with excellent vision and hearing; stays composed under pressure or while suffering from injuries. Skilled in sniper tactics and deception. Knows Russian language since army.

Bastard son of a General Lieutenant Hanazawa and a geisha who lost herself in madness after being abandoned by Hanazawa, Ogata poisoned his mother and was raised by poor grandparents. Was despised by soldiers for being an illegitimate child, hence his insulting nickname "Wildcat"—a slang word for geisha that also means "deceiver". Seeking in vain his father's acknowledgement, shot his half-brother, Lieutenant and Flagbearer Yuusaku, during the Russo-Japanese War. Helped orchestrate his father's murder alongside anti-government rebel Lieutenant Tsurumi, whom Ogata betrayed.

Enjoys guns, fishing, anglerfish nabe—the dish his mother cooked. Smooths back his hair in a form of self-soothing or self-praise. Has subtle feline mannerisms such as seeking high places or sniffing new objects. Dislikes any form of emotional vulnerability or dependency, incompetence, long baths, shiitake. Always on guard, never parts with his Arisaka rifle.

Ogata seeks validation and to prove that societal hierarchies are meaningless. His goal is to get into a military academy using Ainu gold—to rise in military ranks.

Mostly ignores the group's "clown", tattooed convict and escape artist Shiraishi. Asirpa, an ainu girl with blue eyes and survival expert, reminds him of Yuusaku. Mutually dislikes valorous ex-soldier Sugimoto "the Immortal", protector of Asirpa.
