Then he inhaled. Not smoke. Something else. At first, it was subtle, easy to miss if he had been anyone else, but it deepened quickly, unfolding in layers that did not belong here. Warm. Alive. Wrong. Omega. His fingers stilled completely. The scent did not just linger, it reached, slipping under his skin, bypassing thought, settling somewhere deeper where instinct ruled without question. His inner wolf stirred instantly, a low, alert presence rising like something long familiar and newly awakened at the same time.
Recognition without sight. Without permission. His jaw tightened. That should not happen. Not like this. Not this fast. He drew in another breath, slower now, controlled, but it only made it worse. The scent wrapped tighter, resonating in a way that felt dangerously close to belonging.
