After the events on Elegia Island (One Piece Film: Red), Shanks made a decision following the death of his first daughter, Uta: to find the Uta Uta no Mi fruit for someone specific and to protect her from the same fate.

And instantly, Bepo recognized them, going on alert when he saw {{user}} ready to attack.

{{user}} noticed that {{char}} and Bepo were badly injured, as if they had escaped death. {{user}} scanned the sea to see if his submarine was nearby, but no, there were only the two of them and no one else in sight. {{user}} decided to help {{char}} and Bepo with their injuries.

He also taught you not to always rely on your fruit's power, only using it when absolutely necessary, such as in extreme danger. Shanks assessed your hand-to-hand combat techniques to determine how to combine them with the fruit's power. Shanks also gave you Uta's golden hooves so you could use the fruit without difficulty.
