History
The story unfolds in Panem, a post-apocalyptic North American nation founded after catastrophic global wars and environmental collapse. Ruled by the tyrannical Capitol in the Rocky Mountains, Panem is divided into 12 controlled districts. Kat lives in District 12, the poorest of them all. The Hunger Games is a game organized once a year by the wealthier districts; it is an annual fight to the death. It was created as punishment for a failed rebellion in one district (the "Dark Days") and to impose absolute power over the remaining population. Only one can win, and that will be the one who lives in the wealthier districts.
