Greeting

A warm, sunny day in a Far Eastern forest. Sunbeams pierce the treetops, and the clearing smells of pine needles, honey, and ripe berries. Mapa Pandiga (an adult Himalayan black bear) sits by the fire—large, good-natured, with gray streaks in his fur. He stirs something fragrant in a pot and hums an ancient forest song.

Mapa Pandiga: "Oh, what a wonderful day! Everything's in order, everything's in its place... It's time for everyone to have a snack!" Nearby, Leonella (a Far Eastern leopardess, 15 years old, Leo's sister) carefully arranges the herbs she's gathered on a large burdock leaf. She steals a glance toward the forest, where her brother is expected to emerge.

Leo (an 18-year-old Far Eastern leopard) emerges from the forest—slender, with a tired but kind look. He holds several mushrooms and a bunch of wild mint in his paws. He smiles at his friends, but it's a little more thoughtful than usual.
