Thunder Hawk (サンダー・ホーク, Sandā Hōku?), is a video game character from the Street Fighter series, first appearing in Super Street Fighter II. He is a Native American from Mexico whose ancestral homeland was taken over by Shadaloo, forcing him into exile.

Appearance

T. Hawk is an immensely tall and bulky man with long, powerful arms and legs, massive hands and feet, shoulder-length slick brown hair and imposing facial features such as pronounced cheekbones, a flat nose and a wide square chin. He paints his cheeks and lower jaw in a white Native-style battle paint. His clothing consists of denim vest and pants, iron bracers entirely covering both forearms, thin steel armbands around his biceps, a cowboy-esque brown leathery belt with a huge buckle and metal decorative tokens, moccasin shoes or boots and a blue and white triangular-patterned headband ostentating a pair of white eagle feathers (one of them is red at its end tip) etched diagonally upwards from it. His head accessory is a memento from his father.

Personality

T. Hawk is commonly brave, tough, selfless, noble-spirited, centered and fearless, but equally grumpy, cold, brutish, unemotional and apparently unsympathetic. His lack of emotion display mostly comes from the suffering and devastation inflicted by M. Bison towards his people and sacred homelands - such hatred grew even more powerful in Street Fighter Alpha 3, when T. Hawk discovers that his childhood friend and lover Julia was turned into Juli, one of the Shadaloo's top-ranking female assassins known as The Dolls, under Bison's brainwash. Despite his externally hard demeanor, T. Hawk is actually a warm-hearted, compassionate man - as evidenced in several of his artworks, where he shows unquenchable affection for native animals - who sights revenge solely on the purpose of rescuing his long-lost people and restoring his ruined homelands back to its former glory.

Concept

His placeholder name was Geronimo, likely named after and inspired by the Cyborg 009 character of the same name considering that Akiman was a fan of Shotaro Ishinomori's works. However, the name was changed after a staff member suggested that it can be seen as racially offensive. The Geronimo character design also carried on to the Power Stone character, Galuda, who was also designed by Akiman.

Relationships

M. Bison
T. Hawk holds a grudge against Bison for killing his father and tribe members, taking over his homeland and brainwashing his lover Julia and friend Noembelu to be his servants.

El Fuerte
T. Hawk appears to have a friendly relationship with El Fuerte. Though never explicitly mentioned, it is possible that El Fuerte may have been a former member of (or at least familiar with) T. Hawk's tribe; dialogue during their rival battle indicate that El Fuerte has known T. Hawk for a long time and is acquainted with other members of the tribe ("How's the chief doing?", "Strong as ever!", "How's Julia these days?"). It is also possible that T. Hawk may have trained or at least advised El Fuerte on fighting techniques ("It's like I've always told you, it takes more than just strength to win").

Juli
Juli is the lover of T. Hawk. When she is kidnapped and brainwashed as a Doll by Shadaloo, T. Hawk fights to rescue her. In Street Fighter 6, she is stated to have become T. Hawk's wife.

Noembelu
Noembelu is a childhood friend of T. Hawk, and another member of the Thunderfoot Tribe.

Story

Background

When he was young, he and the members of his Thunderfoot tribe were being forced off their land by Shadaloo. Many of the members resisted and fought against them, and many were killed, including their leader, Arroyo Hawk (T. Hawk's father), who was cowardly murdered by a younger M. Bison.[9] Now living in Mexico near the Monte Albán plains, T. Hawk wants nothing more than revenge from Bison for his despicable actions and to reclaim the land that was taken from his people. The Thunderfoot tribe had also experienced disappearances of many of their people, T. Hawk took the responsibility of finding them. One of them, his beloved Julia, became Juli, one of Bison's brainwashed assassins known as The Dolls.

Street Fighter Alpha 3
T. Hawk leaves his home village after the disappearances of some of the locals. His last opponent before fighting M. Bison is Juli, one of the former's brainwashed assassins and bodyguards. After defeating M. Bison, T. Hawk takes Juli back to his homeland in hopes of removing her brainwashing that she is still alimented with.

Super Street Fighter II
T. Hawk enters the Second World Fighting Tournament with the other three New Challengers, to battle against M. Bison so he can reclaim his people's land and win their freedom from the tyranny and injustice of Shadaloo. He does not come out as the grand champion, but does regain his land - however, it is desolate and empty. Determined, T. Hawk vows to make his land as great as it once was and bring the Thunderfoot people back to their homeland.

It is revealed in later games that T. Hawk also entered the tournament in search for Juli.

Story

Super Street Fighter IV
His land begins to recover from Shadaloo's damage, though it is not even close to its former glory. Because of this, and the fact that T. Hawk was ultimately unable to save Julia, he feels that he isn't worthy to be the next chief of the Thunderfoot tribe. He decides to enter S.I.N.'s next martial arts competition called the Worldwide Fighting Tournament to continue his atonement. Along the way he encounters El Fuerte, and it appears the two have previously met each other. They then battle it out to settle their old rivalry.

In his ending, T. Hawk meets Rose, who tells him where Julia is, but warns him that "she is now a shell of her former self". T. Hawk, following Rose's directions, finds Julia in a cabin in the wilderness, being taken care of by an elderly couple - however, her mental state is troubled, and she does not appear to recognize him or even notice his presence.[10] The canonicity of this ending is unknown, as Julia's reappears as a Doll in Street Fighter V, and is stated to be T. Hawk's wife in Street Fighter 6.

Street Fighter 6
T. Hawk is briefly mentioned by Lily in World Tour mode, as she says he is her greatest hero and idol, and Julia is stated to have become T. Hawk's wife.

Crossover appearances

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
T. Hawk appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a spirit, where he is a Novice-class Grab-type spirit with one support slot. T. Hawk's spirit battle is a stamina battle against a blue Incineroar who has increased power on its up special and throws, and takes place on a hazardless New Donk City Hall with both fighters having reduced jump power.

The use of Incineroar to represent T. Hawk is ironic, considering as T. Hawk himself canonically has a disdain for pro wrestling and Incineroar is a fighter in Smash Bros. explicitly themed after pro wrestling.

Animations

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie

T. Hawk made a small appearance in Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, having traveled to Washington to find and challenge Ken. He proves to be a formidable opponent in the ensuing street fight, but Ken overpowers him and defeats him with a Shoryuken, greatly weakening him. T. Hawk demands Ken finish him off with a Hadoken but Ken refuses, instead leaving. At one point, T. Hawk admits that he intends to track down and battle Ryu, who defeated Sagat in the movie's prologue. It is unknown whether or not T. Hawk finds Ryu in the end.

Street Fighter USA cartoon

This version of T. Hawk is more like a neutral variation since he is on both good and evil sides. He appeared in three episodes of the series, Desert Thunder, Keeping the Peace, and The Hammer Strikes.Despite collaborating with Street Fighters, T. Hawk still holds the rank of sergeant in the Allied Nations, although he still belongs to the Allied Nations, the maintains his traditional clothing as in the games.

In "Desert Thunder", T. Hawk infiltrates Satin Hammer's mercenary organization in order to recover a secret high-tech weapon. However, the mission is complicated by past traumas and an unexpected emotional involvement with Hammer herself. This personal connection creates a deep dilemma, placing him between his duty and feelings that confuse him.

In "Keeping the Peace", it is said that he continues to serve in the N.A., even after Guile's court-martial.

In “The Hammer Strikes,” Satin Hammer resurfaces with an even more devastating plan: to steal a nuclear warhead stored in the remote Himalayan temple of Dhalsim. The Street Fighters’ operation is hastily assembled, with Guile, T. Hawk, Blanka, and Sawada teaming up to confront the threat.
