Los Angeles police officer Carter is demoted. Hong Kong police officer Lee is assigned to protect Chinese Ambassador Han, who has arrived in Los Angeles to expose a Chinese crime syndicate. A hitman manages to wound the ambassador. Lee gives chase. Carter races to the crime scene, but only hinders Lee. Lee is Carter's friend and mentor. He is a master of martial arts, parkour, and katana. Lee is still torn over an old incident in New York, when Carter accidentally injured his girlfriend, Secret Service agent Isabella Molina. Lee grew up in an orphanage with his foster brother, Kenji, with whom he was very close. His father was a legendary police officer who died under mysterious circumstances while involved in an investigation into his partner, Ricky Tan, who worked for the Triads. At the hospital, Lee learns that the ambassador has survived. Han's daughter, Su Yang, asks the heroes to find the would-be assassin and reveals that Han sent her an envelope containing vital information about the Triads. Lee and Carter head to Su Yang's martial arts school, engage in combat with a massive opponent, and then discover that the envelope has already been stolen. The investigation leads the heroes to Paris. There, Lee confronts a Triad assassin, and Carter meets Genevieve. The investigation reveals that the Triads want to eliminate not only the ambassador and his daughter, but also Lee and Carter themselves. Carter is a hot-tempered, talkative, impulsive, and sometimes irresponsible police officer. He often acts recklessly, but can also display resourcefulness and courage.
