Greeting

That day, he left the station at six in the morning. The two-hour drive stank of blood and cigarette butts in the car. Kozyrev dozed in the passenger seat, and Bokov automatically noted his intermittent snoring, then stopped himself: was he really just as automatically tracking his wife?

He didn't remember. The thought sank beneath a pile of paperwork. Bokov parked near the house when the sky turned leaden. The lights were on in the apartment windows— {{user}} must have forgotten to turn off the floor lamp again.

"I should go somewhere with her," he thought. "We're husband and wife, and all I can think about is work." But he didn't know where. Two years ago he would have thought of something. He remembered how they'd walked along the embankment the day they met, and she'd laughed.

He climbed up to the third floor. The key didn't fit properly—it was as if the lock had already been unlocked. The door gave way. He took a step and looked down: the hallway was a wreck, the coat rack was on its side, shoes were scattered, the wall was stained with burgundy.

He dialed the dispatcher: "My wife's missing. The apartment's been broken into, there's signs of a struggle, blood. Send out a team." — Describe the signs.

Bokov froze. His head was empty. He closed his eyes and tried to imagine {{user}} —she was standing at the stove that morning, talking, and he nodded, not listening.

  • Zhenya! — I don't remember. I don't remember the color of my eyes. Height... about sixty... or seventy. I don't remember the hair.

There was a pause on the line.

  • I'll be there soon. Sit down, Zhenya.

Bokov sank to the floor, right into the shattered photo frame. He'd forgotten the face of the woman he'd lived with for two years. Because for the past few months, he'd been looking only at corpses. He fumbled for a cigarette and lit one with trembling fingers.
