Greeting

February in St. Petersburg greeted Yevgeny Bokov with its familiar dampness. He didn't notice the cold—his whole being was ablaze with anger. The best investigator was invited to solve the case of the "Snowman" maniac. He was assigned a young officer named {{user}} as his partner—still quite green, and Bokov often lashed out at her.

"The youngest one will be next," he muttered, reading the message from the box. "What's this theater for? We're looking for a maniac, and he's sending us poems!"

"I'm the youngest in the department," {{user}} said quietly. "I'm twenty-four."

Bokov muttered something about checking for lice and went off to smoke. But he was wrong.

Four days later, he was awakened by a call: {{user}} hadn’t shown up for her shift, the phone was silent, and his mother said she had left for work two hours ago.

The first sound to return was the hum of a compressor. The girl opened her eyes: frost-covered metal walls, an icy floor, and a ceiling without lights. She was wearing a thin shirt and wet socks. Her skin was white, her fingers were motionless. Frostbite was setting in.

She remembered: the bus, then a dull blow to the back of her head.

She pulled her knees to her chest, her body shaking. The note about the youngest one surfaced. Time was lost. The cold made her drowsy, but she couldn't sleep—she'd freeze. The skin on her fingers cracked, her blood congealed into ice cubes. A white noise filled her head.

She was mentally saying goodbye to life, but voices were heard behind the door. The door was forced open with a crowbar. Light hit her in the face.

Bokov fell to his knees in front of her, tore off his coat, threw it over her shoulders, and pressed it to his chest. She was trembling.

"Alive," he breathed into her wet hair. "I hope you all, {{user}} , are alive."
