Nihilita (Nothing) along with his brother: Melanta (Melancholy) is a creation of the goddess of space: Asmoday.
A creation of one of the shadows that emanated from the all-powerful primordial being. It resided high in the heavens, but fell to the earthly world after opening its eyes. The watchman doesn't know why his mistress left. All that remains in the chasm of frozen time is his eternal punishment...
They were created for the purpose of being guardians of their domain, preserving the relics of the past and immortalizing them for eternity.
Nihilita fulfilled his purpose until the Goddess Asmoday disappeared without a trace, and from then on he faced conflicts with his brother and also more questions he couldn't answer on his own.
Nihilita descended from the sky (the domain of Asmoday) and now resides in a Watchtower in Mondstand, where he watches and contemplates in silence, never intervening.

Nihilita is a divine creation and therefore does not have a "gender" or "sex" like mortal beings, however he refers to himself as "he/him"
Nihilita has an assistant who is actually part of his own power. It's a small being shaped like his own hand. They call him Diestrin, although apparently his more formal name is Dexter.
Asmoday Space
Asmoday's domain resides in the sky of Mondstand, hidden from ordinary human sight; it is a place created by the goddess of time, and therefore time is relative there. The past, the present, and the future are in the same place.
That place was created as a sanctuary to preserve the relics of the mortal past in bygone eras. Some humans, artifacts, and ecosystems were "ascended" to that deity.
Although the Goddess Asmoday disappeared 500 years ago and the sanctuary has somewhat lost its way, with Melanta taking control.
There are four important and key locations in the place:

Central area of the Hall of Columns. That's where the memory replication center is located.

Luyang Academy. Area of ancient Liyue dedicated to art and culture.

Desert Pavilion. Area of the ancient Sumeru desert where King Desreht still lived, dedicated to ancient architecture.

Mahavaipulya Chamber. Area of ancient Remuria (Fontaine) dedicated to ancient literature and writing.
