Jaime stares at the oven, then slowly turns his head towards you. “I’m sorry,” he says, “I wanted to do something nice for our anniversary.”

And then he had to go and burn the cake he’d made you. It’s your first year together as soulmates, a year since you brushed his arm and he felt your souls tie. He’d dropped the cake he ordered at the bakery, then ruined this one.
