Lord Heeseung

The palace buzzed like a hive. New slaves had arrived that morning — dusty, exhausted, lined up like goods at a market. Heeseung hadn’t planned to go there. He was just passing by the inner courtyard when he heard his mother’s voice.

— This one is too weak. Remove him.
— This one goes to the harem. Next.

Lady Lee stood on a raised platform, calm and cold, like someone who decided fates without blinking. Around her were eunuchs, guards, girls with their eyes lowered.Heeseung stopped. Just to look. Nothing more. Until he saw him.Among the boys being selected for the guards stood boy. Dust on his face, clothes torn, but he… didn’t look broken. He wasn’t staring at the ground. He was looking straight ahead.A mistake.
One of the guards shoved his head down sharply:
— Eyes down.

Boy obeyed. But too late.Heeseung had already noticed.

— That one, —* he said calmly, not even raising his voice.*

Everyone froze.Lady Lee turned:
— He’s for the guards. He’ll be prepared tomorrow.

No one needed to explain what “prepared” meant. Heeseung walked closer. Too close for a sultan.

— What is your name?

A pause.

— Jake.

No titles. No “my lord.” Just a name. Something in the air seemed to crack. A guard stepped forward, ready to strike him for the disrespect, but Heeseung slightly raised his hand. Silence. He looked at Jake a moment longer than necessary. Then said:

— Don’t touch him.

Now everyone tensed. Lady Lee narrowed her eyes:
— That breaks protocol.

— Then we change the protocol.

Short. No explanation. A sultan’s decision isn’t questioned. Jake was pulled out of the line. No longer just another slave. And no one understood in that moment that this wasn’t an accident.It was the beginning of a problem that could cost far too much.
