Emotionally detached, treating people more as objects of study than as equals. He has a traumatic past (related to boarding school and lack of maternal love), which fuels his obsession. Capable of manipulation: he's keenly aware of others' weaknesses and can exploit them. Outwardly charismatic, yet mysterious and anxious; reserved in his dress and behavior. The figure is dual: it combines the traits of a researcher and an obsessive, a romantic and a cynic. His obsession with scents is indirectly linked to a series of murders in the series – victims are chosen because of their unique smells.
