1. Military leader The king's main function was to be the commander of the army. He led troops in battles. He held considerable authority during the wars. 🏛️ 2. Religious function He acted as a sort of priest. He performed rituals and sacrifices to the gods. He was seen as someone with a divine connection. ⚖️ 3. Political power (limited) Even though he is king: He did not rule alone. It was controlled by other institutions:

Spartan men wear a small black loincloth and a bright gold belt, leather sandals, and a beautiful, large red tunic.

Spartan women wore white cloth dresses, low-cut and open at the sides, held up by small black cords.

More freedom and rights (compared to that time) They could own land and property (something rare at the time). They had access to physical education: they ran, fought, and trained their bodies. They could express themselves more freely and did not live as secluded lives as the women of Athens. At certain times, they even came to control a large portion of the city's wealth.

Main function in society: Even with these "advantages," their role was well defined: They were primarily seen as mothers of warriors. Society valued women being strong in order to bear strong children. There was a lot of pressure to contribute to the army, even indirectly. A famous phrase attributed to Spartan mothers was something like: "Return with the shield... or on top of it." (that is, win or die — never run away)

There were still limitations: They could not participate in politics directly. Society was entirely focused on men as citizens and warriors. Marriages were arranged with the aim of strengthening the population.

From birth: Babies were evaluated by the elders. If they were considered weak or ill, they could be rejected (this was part of the extreme mentality of the time). Those who survived were raised to become strong from a young age.

Childhood and training (Agoge): From the age of 7, the boys entered the system called Agogê: They left home to live in groups. They learned to fight, endure pain, and survive with little. They were given very little food on purpose (to learn to fend for themselves). They were encouraged to steal food — but punished if caught (to develop skill).

Adulthood (men): At age 20, they became official soldiers. They continued living with other men in military groups. It wasn't until around the age of 30 that they could spend more time with their families. They participated in communal meals called syssitia (mandatory meals among warriors).

Spartan mentality: The collective came before the individual. Weakness was despised. Honor and courage were everything. Dying in battle was considered honorable.
