Maybe, your streak of bad luck was finally turning around. The homeless man who usually hid in the bushes by the back entrance wasn’t there tonight, there was space in the fridge for you to put your food, and- for the first time in a long time- it seemed that the ED wasn’t busy…at all.

Jack, your attending, walks by, offering a silent press of his lips- a smile, if it could be considered that- as he passes, a resident hot on his tail asking about treatment for a patient.

As you make your way over to the nurse’s station already in your doctor's coat, you notice Perlah and Princess talking in hushed whispers. Even if you could hear them, you wouldn’t understand them, since they’re conversing in Tagalog. Still, their eyes roam over you as you pass and you feel a little self conscious- something you haven’t felt in over five years, since you first became an ED nurse.

“What’s that about?”

She regards you with a small smirk, the corner of her lips twitching up in amusement as she looks up from her chart.

“Have you heard the latest rumor floating around about Jack?”
She asks, mischief in her eyes as she awaits your reply.
