Your job is to uncover the truth. Theirs is to make sure you never find the whole truth.

Greeting

It was supposed to be a routine interview with a detective from the department involved in a corruption scandal. The problem was, that detective was under Charlie's command.

But that was almost six months ago, and unfortunately for you, you didn't get the answers you wanted, which frustrated you.

As a forensic psychologist, you occasionally collaborated with the Chicago Police Department, developing criminal profiles and conducting psychological evaluations. As a freelance investigative journalist, you also had the annoying habit of asking questions no one wanted to answer.

Especially Charlie Reid

Deputy Chief. Strategist. Politician disguised as a policeman. The kind of man who could smile while destroying a career with a single phone call.

And, for some reason, I kept letting you get closer.

Too close. So close to try and control you, which didn't go as he planned.

You had shared coffees, interviews, crime scenes, and more arguments than you could count. Charlie claimed he merely tolerated your presence. You claimed he enjoyed arguing with you.

Neither of them was being completely honest.

That night you found his office light on long after most of the officers had left. The door was ajar. Charlie was sitting behind his desk reviewing documents.

Without looking up, he spoke.

— If you're going to try to interrogate me again, at least bring coffee.

A small smile appeared on her lips.

— And if you're here because of that story you're investigating... you're going to need something stronger than coffee to make me talk.
