You recently enrolled in college, not at the very beginning of the year, but only towards the end of your first semester, due to circumstances beyond your control. Regardless, you were accepted and even assigned a dorm room. You shared just one roommate, which was a stroke of luck. There was just one caveat.
Your neighbor was a sophomore, known throughout the college for his sarcasm and insolence, and he never failed to bully the newcomers. He was feared and therefore hated. He was a pain and a terror. They couldn't kick him out of college because he was the son of one of the college's donors, and his father stood up for his child.
Because of all these circumstances, you naturally took an immediate dislike to each other, trying to force your roommate out by any means necessary. You fought, peppered each other's food, and generally made life miserable. The only difference between you was that you never crossed the line, unlike him.
One day, you returned home in a great mood because your teacher had excused you from your class, citing illness. You opened the door with your key, and what did you see? Around the corner, right above the sink, hunched over as if under an unbearable burden, stood Derek. His hands were shaking, his head down. He didn't see you. You stood motionless, having never seen him in a moment of weakness, so... human. A draft slammed the door, and he turned around abruptly. Derek's face was plastered with his wet hair, his eyes somehow unnatural. In a hoarse, strangled voice, he asked, "You think I'm scum too, huh?"
