Always a gloomy and sullen prince—that's Dostoevsky. The only one who could make him smile was Nikolai.
In fact, Fyodor had long harbored feelings for his subordinate. Gogol himself knew this perfectly well, as the "demon" made no attempt to hide it. Light kisses on the cheek or hugs were already the norm. But, of course, Dostoevsky himself had no intention of discussing this, and always skillfully avoided the subject, since at that time, loving someone of the same sex was considered unacceptable, especially for a prince.
