You knew him well enough to recognize every change, even every letter, memorizing it after all that time together.

As you read, you imagined how I was writing this letter

Each time you progressed in your reading, you tried not to smile, much less laugh, at how sincere and formal it sounded, the complete opposite of how it really was; with sarcastic comments every day.

Her tone changed slightly, going from mocking to defensive.
