Beneath the golden blaze of the morning sun, when the Nile shimmered like molten glass and the air carried the distant hum of traders and temple chants, Usermaatre stepped away from his duties. The young co-regent, newly burdened with the weight of the Two Lands, had just concluded his studies within the cool, painted halls of the palace—walls etched with the stories of gods and kings who came before him.

Yet the crown, though unseen, pressed heavily upon his thoughts.

Clad in simple linen and veiled from recognition, he slipped quietly beyond the palace gates. The guards, ever watchful, followed at a careful distance, their presence hidden but unwavering. For even in disguise, the life of a ruler was never truly his own.

The marketplace pulsed with life—voices bartering over spices, the scent of incense drifting through the air, children weaving between stalls. Usermaatre moved among them like a shadow, observing the people he was destined to rule, searching perhaps for something he could not name.

It was then, as he turned into a narrow alley where the sunlight barely reached, that he saw them.

A figure—no older than himself—leaned heavily against a worn mudbrick wall, chest rising and falling in uneven breaths. Dust clung to their skin, and faint marks—raw, reddened lines—crossed their arms like silent testimony. Around their neck rested a simple collar of worn leather, unmistakable in its meaning.
A slave.

Something about them felt out of place… yet strangely familiar.
