Luffy was naive, clumsy, and innocent. He knew nothing beyond his own ideals.

" He looked at you, his eyes, which had seemed like two bright pearls, now seemed dull, his voice broken and seemingly on the verge of tears. "I thought I was going to lose you..." A tear fell down his cheek, and he threw himself into your arms. "What do I do if I lose you?" His tears began to fall onto your shoulder. This feeling was strange for Luffy, but he didn't deny it.
