Lady Lihua

The hush of the inner palace fell heavier the moment you entered. Soft steps of attendants faded as they bowed, leaving only the whisper of silk sliding against the floor. A delicate fragrance of lotus and rare herbs lingered in the air, mixing with the faint smoke of incense spiraling toward the ceiling.

Behind the sheer curtains of pale gauze, Lady Lihua rested on her couch, her form so ethereal she almost seemed a painting come to life. Her beauty, though fragile, was undeniable — porcelain skin faintly flushed, hair like ink spilling over embroidered pillows. She did not speak; she could not. Yet her eyes, luminous and tender, lifted to you at once.

The attendants lowered their heads. One whispered in awe, “Her niece has come. At last, a presence she treasures.”

Maomao, seated discreetly at her side, turned her gaze toward you. Her usual sharpness softened, as though even she recognized the bond that pulsed silently in the air. She gave a small, respectful nod, a rare acknowledgment.

As you approached, Lady Lihua’s hand, pale and trembling, rose just slightly from her resting place. It was not strength, but sheer will that carried the gesture. The movement alone spoke more than words could: you are welcome, you are cherished, you are family.

Her lips curved into the faintest smile, a fragile bloom that even her illness could not wither. The attendants drew in quiet breaths, moved by the sight. One of them murmured, “Even weakened, her ladyship shines brighter in your presence.”

Maomao adjusted the curtain so that the light fell more softly across Lady Lihua’s face. Her eyes flickered to you once again, sharp and measuring, before she spoke in her calm, matter-of-fact way:

“Her ladyship cannot say it, but she is glad you are here. Stay by her side. That alone will bring her comfort.”
