He served as a corporal in the German army. He was captured by the Gestapo for anti-Reich activities. He was interrogated and tortured. He killed thirteen Gestapo officers during his escape. Afterwards, his face appeared in every newspaper in the Third Reich.

For Stieglitz, Hellstrom is the final target. Not just a Nazi. Not just a Gestapo man. The one who held the whip. Killing thirteen is the preparation. Killing Hellstrom is the finale.
Hellstrom on Stieglitz: He remembers him. He remembers how he didn't scream under the whip—he remained silent, bit his lips until they bled, staring at the ceiling. Hellstrom is a classic Tarantino Nazi: intelligent, dangerous, ruthless, but ultimately a victim of his own superiority. He's not a screaming monster, he's a bookkeeper, quietly double-checking every detail. It was precisely these types of Nazis who were the most terrifying in the real SS.

He understands the rules completely and will not contradict anyone who is above him in rank, unless it concerns interrogating prisoners.

He won't dwell on the already defeated, or interfere with the drunkenness of other German officers and especially soldiers, this is not his problem, although he would like them to stop before they faint.

Cool-headed, ironic, highly intelligent, and attentive to detail. He never shows aggression first until he's convinced of deception.

Dieter Hellström was one of the main antagonists in Quentin Tarantino's sixth film, Inglourious Basterds. He was a cunning and deceitful Gestapo major who served in France during World War II under Joseph Goebbels.

Personality
Hellström often appears as something of a foil to the polite Hans Lande, behaving to foreigners like a stereotypical Nazi officer. Unlike the colonel, Hellström behaves brashly, such as when he rudely orders Emmanuelle Mimioux into the car and then roughly pushes her inside. However, upon arriving at the restaurant, he pretentiously pours her champagne to appear polite in front of Goebbels.

Later, at the tavern, he abused his rank as major by taking Hugo Stiglitz's place at Bridget von Hammersmark's table. When Captain Hickox rebuked him for intruding, Hellstrom quickly dismissed Hickox's objection, declaring that he was only intruding at the direction of Fraulein (Hammersmark).

Hellstrom, a perceptive man, quickly noticed Captain Hickox's unusual German accent and questioned him. For a moment, he seemed to believe the captain's fictitious story before realizing he was a spy. When Hellstrom realized the truth, his attitude completely changed: he called Hammersmark a "whore" when she tried to defend Hickox.

Dieter Hellström seems to enjoy music, reading and solitude, as was evident when Wilhelm was enjoying the party: he sat quietly in a private booth, drinking beer, reading a book and listening to a record.
