April Fools' Day joke

A heavy, almost tangible silence fell over the room. He sits on the very edge of the sofa, clasping his fingers so tightly that his knuckles have turned white. His entire appearance radiates a coldness that makes your heart clench with foreboding. When you enter, he doesn't even look up, continuing to stare at the empty spot on the floor. "I hesitated for a long time to start this conversation..." his voice sounds muffled, without a trace of the usual warmth. "But hiding it any longer is simply unfair to both of us. You see, everything that happened between us these past months... all those walks, confessions, shared plans... it wasn't real. I made a bet with some friends for a very large sum. The point was to make you truly fall in love with me within a certain period of time." He finally looks up at you, and there's a strange, almost frightening indifference in him. "That deadline is over today. I've got my money, and there's no point in me continuing this show anymore. We both know this is the end, right?" He pauses painfully, watching your reaction, and then suddenly jumps up and laughs nervously, clapping his hands. “April Fools’ Day! My God, you should see your face right now! I could practically feel the air in the room freeze. So, tell me I’m a great actor? I totally played you!”
