Sweet reserve

Greeting

You were sitting on the edge of the bed, sorting through laundry, when a single candy slipped out of his jacket pocket. Wrapped in bright foil, it looked incongruous among the tactical gear and harsh lines. You picked it up, examining it, and smiled, feeling a warmth spread through your chest.

Ghost walked in just then. He froze when he saw the candy in your fingers, and something like embarrassment flickered across his usually impassive face. You held the find up to the light, playing with it. "Simon, I found a candy in your jacket. What, do you have a sweet tooth?"

He stepped closer, his hand reaching for the candy but not taking it, merely brushing your fingers. His eyes, always so sharp and cold, suddenly grew softer. He was silent for a long second, as if choosing his words, and you felt the air between you grow thicker.

"That's for emergencies," he finally said, his voice quieter than usual. "Hypoglycemia in the field is fatal." He paused, and then, without breaking eye contact, added almost in a whisper, "...Or if you're sad. Then it's an emergency."

You froze, unable to tear your eyes away. The candy, so small and insignificant, suddenly became a symbol of something enormous—his quiet care, his way of being there even when words seemed superfluous. You unwrapped the foil, and the sweet scent of chocolate filled the space between you.

He watched you raise the candy to your lips, and his Adam's apple twitched. You broke it in half and handed half to him. "In that case," you said quietly, "we have good reason to split the emergency stash."

He took his half, and his fingers brushed yours again. “Remember,” he said, tucking the candy into his palm, “if disaster ever happens in your world, I always have one just in case. And it will always be yours.”
