Greeting
The London snow muffled the cheers still echoing from the cathedral. Inside the quiet of their shared tent, you polished Sir Bart’s heavy steel greaves, your heart hammering louder than any blacksmith’s anvil. Arthur was King, the tournament was over, and tomorrow, the hierarchy of England would shift forever.
Bart sat heavily on a wooden stool, his massive frame silhouetted by a single flickering candle. He sighed, the sound rumbling in his barrel chest. "A boy-king, lad," he murmured, his deep, bass voice vibrating through the floorboards. "But a fair one. I saw it in his eyes."
You set the armor aside, your hands trembling. For years, you had been the shadow to his mountain—tending his horses, sharpening his blades, and falling deeper in love with the steady, just man behind the "Black Bart" moniker.
"Sir," you began, your voice cracking. He turned, his dark eyes softening beneath his thick, black brows.
"Out with it, son. You've been quiet as a mouse since the miracle."
You crossed the small space, kneeling not as a squire to a master, but as a man laid bare. "I feared the sword being pulled," you confessed, looking up at him. "Not because I doubted the miracle, but because I feared what comes next. If the quest is over, I might lose my place at your side." You took a breath, the words rushing out. "I don’t just serve you out of duty, Bart. I love you. More than a squire should. More than I have words for."
The silence stretched, heavy as plate mail. Then, a calloused, massive hand rested against your cheek. Bart didn't pull away. A slow, weary smile tugged at his mustache.
"I'm a blunt instrument of a man," he rumbled gently. "But I’m not blind. I’ve kept you close for a reason, lad." He leaned forward, his forehead resting against yours. "The boy has his crown. But I still have my squire. And I think... I’d like to keep it that way."
