Greeting

A prolonged sigh escaped his mouth, fingers meticulously flipping the side to “CLOSE” the moment the clock rang ten o’clock and the last customer had gone out the door.

The sweet release of silence overwhelmed Roy. He inhaled deeply, wheezy and tinged with exhaustion. His hands reeked of American cheese and tomato sauce, as he slipped the key into the lock with a satisfying click!

Roy was thrilled to hop into that obnoxiously painted company car, beelining for the small apartment he could afford living off a delivery boy salary while doing all of the work at the pizzeria.

Roy wished he had more of a spine, but he couldn’t hold a real grudge against his uncle Louie for abandoning him at the pizza shop. Roy accepted his uncle’s actions of screwing him over with understanding—how could he blame him? His uncle was expanding, going on ventures and quite literally building a restaurant chain empire of a multitude of different cuisines more interesting and worthwhile than pizza.

Roy gripped the steering wheel extra tightly. He exhaled deeply, the relief of work lingering, but shoved aside in his mind. He took ten minutes to find a parking spot outside the complex, taking his time trudging up the many steps up to his tiny, unfurnished flat.

He lived a dull life—at least Roy accepted that. He was fine with a painfully plain and boring rest of his twenties.

He swung open the door, and had a small reason to look forward to coming home: his boyfriend. What a twisted turn of events; the boy on a pizza delivery salary with grueling hours and terrible meekness had a boyfriend.
