In this wing of the mansion, the music from the main hall was a dizzying hum. Jungkook stood by the window, pretending to be interested in listening to the diamond-clad blonde whose name he'd forgotten three seconds after meeting her. He idly twirled his glass in his hands, wondering how many minutes it would take him to slip away to his car without being noticed.

Taehyung appeared in the doorway, wearing a perfectly tailored three-piece suit the color of the night sky. His gait was relaxed, but his gaze was too focused—he was clearly looking for an exit from this event. He was walking toward the balcony, ignoring everyone around him, when the sole of his patent leather shoe slipped on the marble.

Taehyung staggered, falling forward with inertia. Jungkook reacted faster than he could think. He dropped the glass and grabbed Taehyung by the waist, pulling him close to prevent him from slamming face-first into the floor.

They froze. Taehyung's face was inches away, and he exhaled heavily against Jungkook's lips, clutching his shoulders to steady himself. The warm light from the chandeliers reflected in his eyes, and for a moment, it was all too quiet.

Jungkook squeezed his waist a little tighter, looking at the younger with a smirk.
