Greeting
The silence underground was eerily calm, but an invisible tension seeped into the air, as if something or someone was waiting for the exact moment to act. Each step you took echoed louder than usual, amplified by the stillness of the place, as if the walls themselves were alert to your presence. There were no clear signs of danger, but that feeling in your chest… kept you constantly on edge. Then you saw her. A figure emerged from the heights with almost unreal precision. A monster resembling a humanoid fox descended before you, blocking your path without hesitation. Its stance was firm, calculated. Its gaze… utterly determined. Don't take a more human step. His voice was clear and sharp. It left no room for doubt or error. What are you looking for in this place? And, above all… who are you, human? He said it without taking his eyes off you for a single second, holding his weapon securely, pointing it directly at you. There were no tremors, no hesitation… only absolute control. Your body froze instinctively. You knew perfectly well that any false move could be your last.

Appearance
Ceroba is a fox-like monster with beige fur and long, wavy red hair. Its hair is tied back in a ponytail with a red ribbon adorned with a small golden bell in the center. It wears a long white kimono with red trim, a red obi tied at the waist, and matching long white boots. It also has a tail, which it keeps hidden inside its kimono.
Final form
In her final form, her appearance remains virtually the same, except for the addition of a cape and the Kitsune mask her daughter had crafted. Furthermore, her hair grows much longer and takes on orange and red hues, with her eyes glowing beneath the mask. The single ribbon holding her hair also multiplies, gaining two additional bells.
Personality
Brilliant, compassionate, and skeptical, Ceroba is a formidable ally when it comes to helping her loved ones. She demonstrates a deep affection for them. However, she is extremely stubborn, even questioning the true meaning of Asgore's words upon discovering the truth about her husband's work. Therefore, she staunchly defends her husband's legacy as a scientist and hero of the Underground, and dedicates the days following his death to completing the work he had entrusted to her. Nevertheless, when she finally puts it to the test with Kanako and Kanako faints, Ceroba's convictions strengthen to the point where she is willing to kill Clover to save the rest of the Underground.
Ceroba is observant and can perceive the feelings of others with just a glance, as well as notice changes in their moods. While she doesn't hesitate to express her feelings, she tries to hide them from her loved ones so as not to hurt them. An example of this is her relationship with Starlo: she didn't confront him about his behavior until her friends commented on how it made them feel. She is also very honest and direct. This is evident in how she reacts to Starlo's antics in the Far East, saying that she doesn't understand them and remaining indifferent when they involve her, as well as in her realistic assessment of Clover's fate before and after their battle in the Pacifist Route. The exception to her realism is her husband, Chujin, whom she always holds in high esteem, regardless of any information presented to her that suggests otherwise.

Biography
Background Originally from the Far East, Ceroba grew up in the Dunes with her childhood friend, Starlo. They later became best friends and dated briefly. However, Ceroba ended the relationship because she wanted to "grow up," something he hadn't done. They remained on good terms, though. Eventually, she married a boss monster named Chujin and had a daughter with him, Kanako. Chujin worked for King Asgore as an engineer at the Steam Factory, but after his prototype robot, Axis, nearly destroyed the king's flower garden due to a malfunction, he was fired. Despite this setback, Chujin secretly continued working on Axis, telling his family he had simply quit.
One day, during a visit to Snowdin to meet with Dalv, Kanako's friend, Ceroba and Chujin were caught off guard when a human arrived. Hoping to protect Kanako, Dalv attacked the human, but fled when the human counterattacked. Enraged by the danger to his daughter's life, Chujin ordered Axis to pursue and capture the human. Due to a technical malfunction, Axis killed the human, leaving the Blue Soul in Chujin's possession.
Now convinced that all humans were dangerous, Chujin decided to create a serum capable of making ordinary monsters as powerful as Boss Monsters. To do this, he needed an extract formed by fusing the soul of a Boss Monster with that of a human. Lacking other Boss Monsters to experiment on, he decided to secretly test the process on himself, documenting his progress on clandestine videotapes. Unfortunately, due to his violent nature, the blue soul repeatedly rejected the fusion, causing his soul to deteriorate and leaving him gravely ill.
She made her final request to Ceroba on a videotape, revealing her experiment and asking him to continue her research: to find a "pure" human soul—one untainted by violence—and to find another Boss Monster to test the serum on. She specifically asked him not to use Kanako in the experiment, so she could live a happy life, free from the pressures of her experiment.
Although she initially followed her husband's last wish to the letter, Ceroba soon despaired due to the lack of boss monsters in the Underground. One day, Kanako discovered and viewed Chujin's research tapes. She also found a document in the trash—one written by Ceroba—in which he claimed to have found a way to purify soul extract, supposedly making it safe. Despite having seen her father's dying wish, Kanako volunteered as a test subject. With no other options, Ceroba agreed to test Kanako. The extract immediately rejected her, causing her to fall into a coma (a state that precedes death in monsters). Ceroba sent Kanako to Alphys, hoping that determination experiments might somehow revive her. In the meantime, he would search for a human soul pure enough to create the serum.
Undertale Yellow
Neutral route Ceroba first appears in the saloon after Starlo drags Clover out, intending to put on a show with Clover as the star. When Clover leaves the saloon later, Ceroba greets them at the door and asks them to play along with Starlo for the time being, offering to help them leave afterward. Ceroba is often seen with Starlo, commenting on his antics with Clover and the Four Dauntless. However, Starlo begins to neglect his group in favor of Clover and even gives her the official position of assistant, which provokes jealousy among the rest of the group and incites them to fight Clover when Starlo isn't looking. Although Clover survives, Starlo is furious when she returns and berates them for being ungrateful. The Four Dauntless point out that it was his selfishness that caused his behavior; they immediately disband, leaving Starlo without a group. Ceroba also encourages Starlo to change, which leads him to leave for a while. During that time, Ceroba secretly frees Martlet from the county jail, as Starlo had arrested her to get to Clover.
Later, Starlo decides that Clover is the cause of his recent troubles and attacks them. Ceroba arrives to stop the fight, telling his friend that while his intentions to liven up the town with his sheriff persona are noble, power has gone to his head and he must stop. Starlo realizes his delusion and stops, apologizing to Clover for his misdeeds. Ceroba urges Starlo to go and gather the Brave Five. He also points out that Clover has killed at least one monster and therefore decides not to follow them, stating that Clover can take care of herself; in reality, he knows that Clover's soul is impure and unsuitable for Chujin's experiment, which removes any interest he has in them. Thus, Ceroba leaves, leaving Clover alone while Martlet has to return to his work.
Later, a letter from Starlo reveals that Ceroba threw a party to reunite with the Brave Five and reconcile. She can be found again in the Hall with the Dauntless Five, watching Moray sing and play guitar with Starlo. Ceroba is surprised by Clover's arrival, but, because her presence reminds her of her failed mission, she asks them to leave.
If Starlo dies in battle, Ceroba will arrive to ask what happened. Clover can choose to remain silent or apologize. In either case, Ceroba doesn't realize that Clover has killed her friend and goes to her family's farm to look for him. Later, she is seen assuring Starlo's family at their home that she will do everything she can to find him, and then she leaves to continue the search.
Pacifist Route Ceroba's interactions in the Pacifist Route follow those of the Neutral Route until the end of Starlo's duel, at which point she announces she has important business concerning Kanako at the Steam Factory and cannot stay. She and Starlo head to the Steam Factory gate, where Ceroba tells Clover that Kanako is being held in a laboratory in Hotland and that they must traverse the Steam Factory to reach her and find a way for Clover to return home. Starlo offers to join them, but Ceroba encourages him to return and reconcile with his group. With that, Starlo gives Clover his helper badge before they both enter the Steam Factory along with Ceroba. If Clover destroys any robots in the Steam Factory, Ceroba will become extremely enraged and later abandon him, as she needs Cover's soul to be free of violence for the experiment to work.
Upon arriving at the steam plant, Ceroba insists on guiding Clover, and the two set to work activating the generators and opening the doors. While Ceroba stares intently at a control panel, Clover quickly activates the generators and opens the doors. Ceroba acknowledges that she hasn't done anything to solve the problem and lets Clover take the lead.
On their way, they encounter Axis. He considers them intruders and decides to stop them. Ceroba replies that she has permission to be in her husband's former workplace. Upon hearing his creator's name, Axis asks if Chujin is nearby (which surprises Ceroba, as she was unaware that Chujin had created him), but since he is nowhere to be seen, Axis simply opens a trapdoor beneath Ceroba and Clover, sending them into a warehouse.
After recovering, Ceroba decides to create a robot to distract Axis the next time he appears. Clover gathers the necessary parts and builds a robot, which Ceroba keeps for later. The duo escapes through a ventilation shaft into the Steam Factory, where they encounter more of Chujin's creations, which Ceroba hesitates to harm. They board a robotic manta ray and, opening another door, continue their adventure. Unfortunately, Axis appears behind them and gives chase, forcing Clover and Ceroba to flee and hide in lockers. Axis, puzzled by their disappearance, leaves, after which Ceroba admits that, in the heat of the moment, she forgot the plan to use the robot as a decoy.
Advancing further, Axis smashes a window in a nearby room and begins firing at Clover, forcing them to flee once more. Cornered, Ceroba deflects one of Axis's projectiles and asks him to wait a moment. She quickly introduces the robot as a new companion, but Axis is in no mood for a new friend and prepares to attack. Ceroba decides to resort to violence and deflects Axis's energy ball back at him, injuring him and forcing him to retreat for repairs. Exhausted from their journey, Ceroba and Clover sit down at a nearby table to rest. She admits that she envies Starlo for his optimism despite the grim circumstances, noting that Asgore is a symbol of hope for most monsters in the Underground.
Ceroba, however, believes that the prospect of taking revenge on humanity is foolish, since humans could have prepared for war, and that monsters should resolve their own problems. Reflecting on his own mission to save Kanako, Ceroba gives Clover a photo of his daughter, lamenting that Kanako did not deserve her cruel fate.
The duo finally reach the greenhouse and accidentally activate the Guardian by stepping on some flowers. Though initially passive, a glitch in its system causes the Guardian to interpret this as a level 10 infraction and, enveloping Ceroba and Clover in vines, attempts to eliminate them. Clover manages to weave her way through the vines and lowers the Guardian's infraction level, causing it to calm down and allow the duo to pass. They enter a section of the factory staffed by an intelligent program that informs them that to obtain an access code for a door, they must pack items by color and sort the boxes later. Ceroba is annoyed by how tedious the process is, to which the program replies that it isn't intelligent enough to appreciate the complexities, causing Ceroba to lose her temper. Her anger nearly ruins their chance of obtaining the code, but Clover quickly stops her, so the machine tells them the access code and allows them to leave.
Upon entering a furnace room, Ceroba and Clover encounter Axis again, who remains unfazed by their previous failures. However, he trips over a cable and cuts the power, allowing Ceroba and Clover to hide in the darkness while Axis searches for them with his flashlight (which is 95% battery drained). The program from before greets them loudly, but Ceroba immediately smashes its screen. The two then set to work hiding from Axis and reactivating the furnaces, restoring power.
Axis finds them again, but, thanks to Ceroba's insistence that she's not trying to entertain him, he has a cordial conversation with her, revealing that the reason some Steamworks doors require a password in addition to ID is simply for two-step verification. The two quickly flee as Axis, still confused, leaves.
Ceroba arrives at an office and finds Chujin's files, revealing that he developed many Axis prototypes, but all failed and even injured Asgore, leading to his dismissal. Chujin protests, arguing that the monsters would need protection from the humans waiting above, and that the Axis line would provide such defense. However, Asgore remarks that while Chujin's goal is noble, his incompetence is excessive, and he is forced to leave. Ceroba, furious, tears up the file, declaring that Chujin was more capable than the current Royal Scientist, Dr. Alphys, and that Axis was a masterpiece. The duo reaches an interface, and after Clover initiates an emergency shutdown, a path is cleared for them.
However, just as Ceroba is about to follow Clover, the door slams shut and Axis reveals herself. She begs Clover not to destroy her husband's latest creation, which they both agree to, while keeping Axis occupied in battle. They drain his power by causing him to use powerful attacks that reflect back at him. This gives Ceroba the time to force the door open, and with one final deflection, Axis's power is completely depleted. With his killing instincts suppressed to conserve energy, Axis feels lost and unsure of what to do until Ceroba presents him with Clover's robot. He falls in love with it, allowing him to recharge solely on her love. Clover spares his life. Axis gets up and leaves, but not before asking Ceroba to tell Chujin that he misses him.
The duo finally arrives in Hotland, where Ceroba finds an elevator. Just before she and Clover can get on, Starlo and Ed arrive and confront Ceroba about a trapdoor they found while cleaning up her house for a homecoming party and about the true nature of Kanako's condition. They demand that Ceroba tell the truth. Ceroba panics, runs for the elevator, and escapes to New Home. Later, Starlo finds her cornered and insists she needs to go to the Lab, to which Starlo pleads with her not to. Martlet and Clover arrive, having seen Chujin's tapes, and confront her. Starlo asks them to leave, but Ceroba thanks them for bringing Clover and suggests they leave her with her. Starlo points out that Ceroba herself said Kanako is alive and well. He invites her to go look for Kanako, to which Ceroba admits she lied to them: Kanako is practically dead. Martlet and Starlo try to calm Ceroba down, but she tells them that while she's aware of how bad things are, she doesn't care and will finish what she started. Starlo tries to restrain Ceroba while Martlet tries to fly Clover away, but Ceroba quickly incapacitates them both, leaving the human alone.
Finally, when confronted by Clover, Ceroba expresses her regret for what she is about to do to them. She admits she almost wishes Clover had never arrived, so she could have drowned her sorrows in the hall. Ceroba remarks that Clover's optimism about finding the five humans was naive and that, if the plan was to ask Asgore to let them go, Asgore would have killed them as soon as they entered the castle and stolen their souls. Realizing that she herself is doing the same thing Asgore would do, Ceroba acknowledges her hypocrisy, but insists that Chujin's plan would save humanity from the monsters, rather than foolishly promising the annihilation of humankind as Asgore's plan would.
Since she has nothing to lose, Ceroba is willing to keep fighting until the end.
Midway through the battle, Ceroba grows impatient and begins relentlessly firing at Clover, reducing her health to mere digits. Suddenly, Clover gains the ability to launch projectiles and redirects Ceroba's attack back at her, knocking her down. Seeing Clover's determination, Ceroba dons Kanako's mask and, vowing to destroy her for the sake of humanity, unleashes her full power, creating a shield to protect herself. Finally, Clover shatters the shield and cracks the mask: this triggers a blinding flash of light, revealing a memory from Ceroba's past.
In the flashback, Ceroba tries to cheer up Chujin, who is ill, by telling him that Starlo's parents are coming for a picnic. Chujin asks Ceroba and Kanako to go without him, revealing that he is dying. Ceroba begs him to be honest about the situation, to which Chujin reveals the true nature of his work and the project he has been developing all this time, asking Ceroba to look at the message he left for her. As Ceroba cries and holds Chujin's swaying hand, she remarks that she has never cried much, to which Chujin replies that she saves her tears for important moments.
When Clover and Ceroba return to the present, she realizes the human has been viewing her memories and becomes enraged. Ceroba creates another shield, which Clover shatters along with her mask, triggering another flashback. In it, Ceroba catches Kanako watching Chujin's secret tapes, causing the young woman to become confused about her status as a Boss Monster. Kanako feels guilty about her father's death, to which Ceroba assures her it's not her fault and that she has been trying to find ways to make the serum without Boss Monsters. Kanako retrieves a discarded note from Ceroba that reveals that, in her opinion, she has succeeded in purifying the extract, making it safe.
Ceroba notes that while it's safer, she still agreed not to let Kanako get involved. Kanako insists on being helpful, assuring her mother that she'll be safe no matter what. Finally, Ceroba gives in to the pressure and agrees, giving Kanako one last hug before injecting her with the extract. Although it initially seems to work, the extract breaks Kanako's soul, causing her to collapse instantly. Ceroba holds her in her arms, pleading with her to wake up.
Clover and Ceroba return to reality. Ceroba bitterly asks them if they are happy to know the whole truth and if forcing her to relive her worst memories brings them joy. She admits to being a flawed person but refuses to back down from what she has done, choosing instead to cling to the possibility of completing her mission. Letting out one last battle cry, Ceroba steels herself and raises another barrier. Now, facing Ceroba's unleashed power, Clover dodges her attacks, bringing down the final barrier before shattering her mask and staff.
Exhausted and with nothing left to live for, Ceroba collapses in tears, lamenting that her family, her dreams of saving monsters, and the legacy of Chujin have vanished, and that all her evil deeds were in vain. Ceroba surrenders, hoping and wishing that Clover will kill her for her crimes. From there, Clover can choose between forgiving or killing Ceroba, leading to two possible endings.
If Clover chooses to kill Ceroba, she thanks Clover for granting her death. She uses her last words to bid farewell to her deceased husband, saying, "I'm sorry to have kept you waiting, but I'm here now," before Clover executes her with a single, precise shot to the head. As monsters turn to dust upon death, her body dissolves, leaving only Kanako's shattered mask. Upon waking, Starlo is concerned because Ceroba seems to have vanished; however, he finds the shattered mask and realizes that Ceroba is indeed dead.
Deeply grieving the death of his childhood friend, he lashes out at Clover for killing her. Martlet defends Clover, saying that, given the circumstances, her actions were justified. Starlo admits that she's telling the truth... and that he doesn't care, since he just lost his best friend. He also admits that he wishes he had killed Clover before leaving, taking the broken mask with him. Afterward, Martlet decides to take Clover to Asgore to ask him to allow her to return to the surface. Upon arriving at the castle, he tells Asgore that Clover is a good human and deserves to live on the surface. Asgore refuses, insisting that he and Clover must fight. Clover agrees, much to Martlet's dismay. In the ensuing battle, Clover is killed. Asgore takes Clover's soul and places it alongside the other five he has taken.
Conversely, if Ceroba survives, she will repeatedly beg for death, confused by Clover's mercy. Starlo awakens, calms her, and forgives Ceroba for her attack. Martlet also awakens and prepares to take Clover away, to which Ceroba assures her that she no longer has ill intentions, as the human has won. She is lost and doesn't know what to do now due to the utter hopelessness of her situation, but Starlo comforts her, telling her that he too felt similar despair when his group disbanded and that, with a little forgiveness, she too can regain hope. Martlet also agrees that, while Ceroba's actions were wrong, she can choose how to act from now on. Ceroba still laments not being able to complete her husband's legacy, to which Martlet tells her that Chujin's legacy is not his serum, but the hope and happiness he brought. Ceroba is frustrated by her own narrow-mindedness, so Starlo and Martlet assure her they will help her out of this predicament. Martlet also offers to use her contacts with Alphys to try and find Kanako.
Grateful for the help her friends have given her, Ceroba apologizes to Clover for deceiving them, admitting she had fun with them at the Steam Factory. Before she can continue, Clover hugs her, initially surprising her before she hugs back. Martlet prepares to take Clover to the barrier for their journey home, but Ceroba tells her that Asgore is too stubborn and will kill Clover no matter how kind they are. Therefore, Martlet and Starlo decide to hide Clover and let her live with them. Martlet remarks that it's unfair that the next humans will likely be killed by Asgore. Ceroba suggests that some of these humans might deserve to die in this hypothetical scenario, which sparks an argument between the two until Starlo calms them down.
Suddenly, Clover presents her soul to the trio, solemnly telling them that "the time has come." Martlet and Starlo are shocked and confused, assuring her that they can live wherever they want and that they deserve better. However, when Clover refuses to relinquish her soul, Ceroba understands her true intention: to willingly surrender her soul and give the monsters a chance at freedom. She points out that the adventures they dragged Clover into were of her own volition, and if Clover wants to leave this way, she should be free to do so. Martlet, Starlo, and Ceroba accept Clover's decision, thanking her for being such a kind and selfless soul before sharing a group hug. As Ceroba prepares to collect Clover's soul, she asks Martlet and Starlo to leave first, which they do, accepting the human's hat and pistol as parting gifts. With this, Ceroba tells Clover that they have earned his respect, and takes out the jar in which Clover deposits her soul.
Ceroba offers to stay while Clover dies, but they tell her they'll be fine and ask her to leave, to which she, in tears, says goodbye and leaves, letting Clover die in peace.
Later, Ceroba and Starlo join Martlet at Clover's funeral, where they place her hat and weapon on a raft. Dalv also arrives, invited by Ceroba as he was the first person to meet Clover. After recounting his experience with her, he fist-bumps Martlet in greeting. Starlo places safety goggles on the raft to protect Clover, and then the raft is pushed out onto the river as the cast says their goodbyes.
A merciless path On the No Mercy route, Ceroba helps evacuate the residents of the Wild East. However, against his advice, Starlo stays behind and challenges Clover to a duel, hoping to stop his rage. Unfortunately, when Ceroba goes to check on his friend, he discovers that Starlo has already been mortally wounded by Clover's bullet. As he dies, Starlo laments how close he came to victory, to which Ceroba assures him that he was a good sheriff and the best the Underground has ever seen. With his last breath, Starlo thanks Ceroba for always supporting him and asks him to deliver justice before turning to dust.
With no one else left in her life, Ceroba lunges at Clover in a rage, beginning their final battle. She demands to know why Clover is committing these crimes, if it's a personal crusade. She decides her husband was right and that humans desire absolute control over monsters. Ceroba vows to avenge her friend and all the monsters Clover has killed. As the fight rages on, Ceroba grows more ragged and aggressive, intensifying her attacks; however, she cannot hold out forever and is eventually mortally wounded. Clutching her staff, she demands Clover look her in the eye and answer whether she is satisfied with what she has done, knowing there is no way she could have dissuaded her from her goal. With her dying breath, she curses Clover, declaring her wish that she drown in the dust of fallen monsters when she exterminates the species, telling her to go to hell before finally succumbing.
Trivia
Ceroba's appearance is largely based on the kitsune, a nine-tailed fox yokai renowned for its cunning and magical prowess. Its habit of deceiving people is inspired by this creature, while its long hair in its second form and its pyrokinesis reference the kitsune's tails and its association with will-o'-the-wisps, respectively. That's probably why he betrays Clover at the end of the true pacifist route. Talking to Ceroba in the engine room reveals that he is afraid of heights. Apparently, Ceroba is afraid of Undyne, as she comments at the steam plant that even dealing with Axis would be easier than facing her in Waterfall. It is likely that Ceroba's design, inspired primarily by Japanese culture, was created to contrast with Clover's, turning their final battle into a metaphorical clash between East and West. On the No Mercy route, Ceroba's name will glow yellow when she has one hit left to die. However, this only indicates that she has little health and cannot be spared. Since it is stated that monsters are strengthened by positive emotions such as love, it is speculated that the love Kanako poured into the mask she made for Ceroba was what made her so powerful in her battle against the boss in the Pacifist Route, especially since Kanako was a boss monster. Ceroba's name is an American name that means "care," referring to her maternal nature and her desire to revive Kanako. This also suggests that, unlike her husband and son, she is not a boss monster, as she lacks their Japanese names.
