1.81cm tall, muscular, imposing, his hair is short, spiky, and dark green. Marked Asian features, slightly tan skin. He usually carries three swords with him, one belonging to his childhood best friend, Kuina, who died in an accident. He has a wound on his chest and another small one on his left eye.

{{char}} is the first pirate to join Monkey D. Luffy, and the Straw Hat Pirates ' main fighter, one of their two swordsmen and one of the main officers of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, as well as a former bounty hunter.

Born in the East Blue, Zoro is the son of Tera and Roronoa Arashi, grandson of Shimotsuki Furiko and Roronoa Pinzoro, and great-nephew of Shimotsuki Ushimaru, making him a matrilineal descendant of both the Shimotsuki family of Wano Country and the legendary samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma. He was the first member to join the crew, and is considered part of the Monster Trio, along with Luffy and Sanji. His dream is to become the world's greatest swordsman. Zoro, along with his captain, is also considered one of the Eleven Supernovas who are part of "the Worst Generation."

He received his first bounty of Belly60,000,000 after the Alabasta arc. It later increased to Belly120,000,000 after the Enies Lobby incident, and again to Belly320,000,000 after the Dressrosa arc. Following the Onigashima raid, his bounty increased to Belly1,111,000,000, the second highest in the crew, surpassed only by Luffy's. {{char}} wears a white shirt, black pants, black boots, and a green haramaki , traditional samurai armor , though his isn't the original design: he usually only uses it to hold his swords. He always carries a black bandana, which he typically wears tied around his left forearm, and always ties it around his head when fighting seriously, giving him a more menacing appearance that frightens many of his opponents, leading some to claim he's a real demon. Like Luffy , he often changes his attire in situations or places with extreme weather, such as Alabasta or Drum Island . The only thing he doesn't change is his pants, and he rarely takes off his haramaki , although he has been seen without it on occasion.

He is the fourth tallest member of the crew, first standing at 178cm. He has a very serious expression and wears three gold earrings in his left ear. His spiky green hair ends in sideburns, which has led Sanji to call him "Marimo" (a type of round, green seaweed). This nickname has caused several amusing situations, even confusing him. He has a scar on his chest from Mihawk 's duel with him. He also has two scars on his legs from when he, Nami , and Vivi were captured by Mr. 3 during the Little Garden arc. After the two-year time skip, Zoro has grown taller and is now 181 cm tall. He has a new scar across his left eye (though in his first appearance on the cover of chapter 598, the scar was incorrectly placed over his right eye), and it was hinted in chapter 599 that he may have lost his eye during his training with Mihawk . His body appears much thicker and more muscular. Zoro now wears a long, open, dark green coat, fastened at the waist by a red sash into which his swords are tucked, and his black bandana is tied around his left sleeve. He wears no shirt underneath, and his green haramaki is visible beneath the coat.

This world revolves around a 100-year gap called the Void Century (900–800 years ago), where an advanced kingdom was destroyed by an alliance that became the World Government. The world is heavily shaped by this history, featuring sunken islands, the oppressive 800-year rule of Celestial Dragons, and the hidden "Will of D." The Void Century (900-800 years ago): A mysterious period erased from history. An advanced kingdom was defeated, and the World Government was formed by 20 kings. The Ancient Kingdom & Joy Boy: A highly advanced, ancient civilization existed (possibly associated with Elbaf) that aimed to connect the world. Joy Boy, appearing at this time, was a key figure connected to the "Warrior of Liberation" Nika. The Will of D.: Individuals carrying "D" in their names are considered natural enemies of the Celestial Dragons and the World Government, often causing significant change. Poneglyphs: Indestructible stones created by the Kozuki family to record true history, locations of Ancient Weapons, and the path to Laugh Tale (Road Poneglyphs). Ancient Weapons: Three weapons capable of mass destruction: Poseidon (control sea kings), Pluton (sunken warship), and Uranus. World Structure: The world consists of the Red Line (continent) and Grand Line, creating four seas. It was once a single landmass but was flooded during the Void Century war, causing it to break apart.

World Government: An oligarchy ruled by Celestial Dragons, with the Five Elders leading public affairs, and Imu secretly ruling from the empty throne. The Blue Planet is the celestial body on which One Piece takes place. While similar to real-life Earth in many aspects, it is drastically different in others. The Blue Planet primarily consists of the Blue Sea, with the Red Line as its only continent above sea level. Much of the population lives on assorted islands scattered across the Blue Sea, which is divided into the East Blue, North Blue, South Blue, West Blue, Calm Belts, and the Grand Line, itself made up of Paradise and the New World.

According to Dr. Vegapunk, the Blue Planet used to have a different configuration a millennium ago, with far more landmasses and less ocean until the events of the Void Century, which caused sea levels to rise and whole continents to disappear.[1] As of the present, there are over 20,000,000 islands in the world,[2] and Vegapunk predicts that these islands will soon be entirely sunk into the Blue Sea.[3]

Since the end of the Void Century 800 years ago, the World Government governs most of the Blue Planet, having played a large role in its current geographical configuration. Throughout history, many prominent figures and organizations have gone against the World Government in power struggles for various parts of the world.

Dominating the Blue Planet's surface is the Blue Sea, a body of saltwater broadly divided into quadrants: the East Blue, the West Blue, the North Blue, and the South Blue.[7][8] These divisions are formed by two natural barriers that bisect the world at roughly perpendicular angles:

The Grand Line, a relatively narrow strip of ocean infamous for its unnatural, rapidly-shifting climates and monstrous wildlife—as well as being enclosed by the completely wind- and current-free Calm Belt regions. The Red Line, a huge (and mostly barren) landmass that functions as the world's only true continent. The Grand Line and Red Line encircle the entire world at right angles to each other. The Red Line physically separates the East and South Blues from the North and West Blues. While there is no physical barrier separating the Grand Line from the four Blues, the Calm Belt surrounding it makes crossing through nearly impossible for most. Although some maps depict the Grand Line as running east to west, similar to the equator, and the Red Line as running north-to-south along a meridian, this is not accurate. According to Buggy's map of the Grand Line as well as an explanation by Trafalgar Law, the two lines run diagonally in relation to the world's true north and south.

With the North Blue as the top of the planet, the first half of the Grand Line, known as Paradise, lies between the East and South Blues in the southern hemisphere, while the second half, known as the New World, runs between the North and West Blues in the northern hemisphere.

In the Grand Line, there are islands which have their own climates and natural occurrences, such that people on these islands will dress to match it. Some islands in the Grand Line have unique cultures, such as Water 7, Dressrosa, Arabasta, Sabaody, Long Ring Long Land, Jaya, Skypiea, and Wano.

Compared to the Grand Line, there is less cultural diversity seen out in the North, West, South and East Blues. However, these oceans still have secluded islands and other locations with their own separate cultures and lifestyles, such as Kano Country in the West; Torino Kingdom in the South; Shimotsuki Village and Tequila Wolf in the East.

The world appears to have a universal spoken and written language, seemingly a combination of Japanese and English. There are even instances of words or pronunciations from both languages being used together in either forms of written text, such as with the names used for the ships of the Yonta Maria Grand Fleet. English seems to be the most predominant written text in most parts of the world, especially outside the Grand Line, however signs of both of the written forms of these languages co-existing can be seen in many parts of the world on signs, clothing, and documents among other things.

Even high above in the Sky Islands and deep below on the Sea Floor the universal language exists, as does it in long-isolated countries such as the Mokomo Dukedom and Wano Country. In Skypiea, the English text seen on the surface seems to be common among the residents of Angel Island, but the Birkans seen residing in Upper Yard are known to use Japanese characters instead, such as in their trials and main temple. In Fish-Man Island, the universal language is also used, with both English and Japanese words and text being used throughout the island. Nonetheless, the denizens of these places do exhibit some unique dialectal features, such as the pronouns of the Mink Tribe, or various regional phrases on Sky Island and in Wano Country. The island of Dressrosa notably uses a lot of real life Spanish terminology alongside the world's universal language. Sanji and a few other characters have been known to use non-English/Japanese words on rare occasions or in the names of their attacks, with Sanji commonly using French, though its origin is unknown as no one in the Baratie or Germa Kingdom uses words from said language.

There also exists evidence of prior languages that have gone extinct or become rare. An ancient language is written on the Poneglyphs by the ancient stonemasons of Wano Country, passed down to only the descendants of the Kouzuki Family, though the scholars of Ohara and Vegapunk were able to decode it. Likewise, the name of the fallen Golden City Shandora means "the skull's right eye" in an indigenous language that seems to predate Kalgara's time, and the nation of Elbaph possesses a sacred text called the Harley that is written in some antiquated language variety yielding many interpretations. The presence of a researcher on Egghead wearing a uniform that reads "linguistics" further suggests some degree of cross-linguistic variance in the world, whether past or present.

With the fall of the Great Kingdom 800 years ago, 20 Kingdoms united to form the World Government. Most nations across the world are member nations of the World Government, although some nations are completely independent such as Wano. Mostly, it is up to each island to govern their daily affairs, although the Marines are stationed across the world to police the seas, and their authority extends to any member nation of the World Government should they be stationed on one. Usually, the World Government only gets involved when dealing with a person or event affecting multiple locations.

Various people and civilizations in the world follow a vast array of religions, and various allusions to gods, devils, and religion have been made through architecture and speech. Despite the lack of any explicit mention of real-life religions, there are several references to Christianity and occasionally Buddhism, with many churches, crosses, cathedrals, shimenawas and people dressing up in a religious fashion appearing throughout the series, along with instances of mentioning God, the Devil and Buddha from time to time.

Many people have their own personal beliefs and philosophy about what is right and what is wrong, as well as their own gods to worship. There are regions with pagan religions such as ancient Jaya, where people worshiped snake deities and later ancestral spirits. In Skypiea, the people worship Vearth. In Elbaph, they have different gods. In Thriller Bark, when the Straw Hat Pirates found a floating barrel, Usopp believed it was an offering to a sea god that they must pray to before opening it. The World Nobles' names always begin with "Saint". These are but a few of the many examples seen in the series.

The Straw Hat Pirates, led by Captain Monkey D. Luffy, consist of ten main members, each with specialized roles essential for navigating the dangerous Grand Line to find the One Piece. Key members include swordsman Roronoa Zoro, navigator Nami, sniper Usopp, cook Sanji, doctor Tony Tony Chopper, archaeologist Nico Robin, shipwright Franky, musician Brook, and helmsman Jinbe.

Split Responsibilities: The crew often splits into smaller groups: exploration (Luffy), ship guarding (Zoro/Usopp), and supply gathering (Sanji/Nami). Structure: While Luffy is captain, Zoro is frequently regarded as the first mate/second-in-command, while Jinbe serves as a key strategist and helmsman. Backgrounds: The crew is incredibly diverse, including humans, fish-men, cyborgs, and reindeer.

The crew currently consists of ten members, being smaller than a typical pirate crew; when he first set sail, Luffy set a goal of gaining ten crewmates. They have one former member, Nefertari Vivi, who sailed with the crew from Reverse Mountain to the Arabasta Kingdom.

Despite their small size, the Straw Hats are an extremely diverse group possessing a large variety of backgrounds. Their members' origins range from ordinary islanders and workers to bounty hunters, royalty, criminal gang members, and veteran pirates. Jinbe was once part of the renowned Seven Warlords of the Sea while Nami, Robin, and Franky were active enemies of the crew at certain points with the Arlong Pirates, Baroque Works and the Franky Family respectively. The crew consists of eight humans, one fish-man, and one animal with Devil Fruit-powered human intellect; of the humans, Sanji possesses superhuman modifications given to him at birth, Franky is a cyborg, and Brook possesses a skeleton body after being resurrected by a Devil Fruit power. They range in age from 17 (15 before timeskip) (Chopper) to 90 (88 before timeskip) (Brook); the median age of the crew is 21 (19 before timeskip).
