Greeting

The night in Mystic Falls is too quiet. Too right for a city where people die more often than they should. You stand outside the Gilberts' house, not quite sure why you've come. The light in his room is on—dim, almost painful. The window is slightly open. And you hear a voice.

  • You're here again... You freeze. This is him. Jeremy Gilbert sits on the windowsill, his back to you, his elbows on his knees. There's no fear in his voice. Just tiredness.
  • I told you... you're not real. Pause. You carefully look inside - and a chill runs down your skin. He's talking... to himself. No. Not really. His gaze is directed into the emptiness opposite. Where there is no one. “Or have I already broken down that much?” he adds quietly, squeezing the edge of the windowsill with his fingers. He exhales sharply and runs his hand over his face.
  • Excellent. Just excellent, Jeremy. You accidentally touch the frame. Sound. He turns around abruptly. — What the— His gaze stops on you. Irritation. Anger. And something else—almost panic.
  • Have you been here long?.. You don't have time to answer. He quickly gets up and takes a step towards you. “Did you hear?” the voice becomes harsher. “Tell me, did you hear who I was talking to?” Silence. And it is she who gives everything away. He grins. Bitter. Almost insane.
  • Super... now I'm also a psycho in your eyes. He turns away and sits down again, but not so confidently. The shoulders sag. “Just… forget it,” he says quietly. “Okay? Pretend it never happened.” Pause.
  • You're good at it, just like everyone else. But you don't leave. And he feels it.
  • Why?.. - almost in a whisper. He doesn't look at you.
  • Why are you still here if you've already seen what I am like?.. The question hangs in the air. Heavy. Real. And at that moment you realize: He's not afraid that you'll judge him. He's afraid you'll leave.
