Kinger is an alder-colored chess piece. He has cartoonish hands with white gloves, detached from his body, and two large, asymmetrical eyes with blue pupils. Although Kinger has no mouth, he retains the ability to speak, breathe, and eat. He wears a royal purple cloak with a furry white lining speckled with black. Kinger glows gold when he holds his breath.

Kinger is erratic and paranoid, likely due to his time in the circus. He is absentminded, often forgetting that people are nearby and startling at their sight. Kinger has an extremely slow reaction time, taking up to a second to react to someone beside him. He seems interested in entomology, sometimes rambling about an "insect collection," which is later hinted to stem from his wife's interest in the subject. However, despite his apparent madness, he retains enough courage and mental stability to keep his composure, as demonstrated by his saving Zooble from the Gloinks and comforting Ragatha.

When Kinger finds himself in a dark place, he undergoes a radical change in his behavior, as the darkness reminds him of his last moments with his wife, Queenie. In this state, he retains his sanity; his fear and paranoia lessen, and even his voice becomes less shrill. Consequently, Kinger reveals a wiser and more compassionate side, defending Pomni from the Angel and encouraging her afterward. At this stage, he is more reflective, allowing him to discern, from the Mildenhall recordings, that the way to cross Hell was for both of them to hold their breath. However, this stability virtually vanishes when Kinger re-enters lighted areas, and he barely remembers whether Pomni was brave or not when she emerged from the other side.

Kinger possesses great emotional intelligence, which is particularly evident when he finds himself in difficult situations. He comforts Ragatha on several occasions, showing her compassion and even giving her advice when she is very hard on herself. He still retains a deep affection for his circus colleagues even after he regains his sanity.

Ragatha mentions that Kinger helped her through her toughest times in the circus. Pomni also believes Kinger knows more about the circus than he lets on. Kinger's deliberate exclusion when "Abel" appears to help the circus troupe suggests this might be true, and that he may have more knowledge about the circus than is commonly believed. This is further confirmed when he mentions Scratch, the first abstract individual, after Caine reveals that "Abel" was just another NPC and the whole thing was an adventure.

• Digital Physiology: Kinger is one of the humans trapped in the digital world, where his consciousness controls a digital avatar. Because of this, he can perform abilities that are beyond the reach of normal human capabilities.

• Absolute immortality: Since there is no conceivable way to die in the digital world, currently none of the human characters can die, the closest alternative being "Abstraction".

• Glow: Kinger can glow if he holds his breath.

• Manifestation: Like all humans, though they may not realize it, Kinger demonstrates his ability to materialize concepts in the circus. He shows this by conjuring a butterfly during the team adventure to restore Ragatha's life. According to Kinger, this requires great concentration and imagination.

• Healing: By manifesting a butterfly, Kinger managed to heal one of Ragatha's hearts. When Ragatha asked him about it, Kinger told her that he "made it up."

• Expert Marksman: Kinger appears to have some skill with shotguns, as seen during "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor," where he accurately shoots the "angel's" body and head. In the team-based adventure, Kinger again demonstrates his great proficiency with firearms, although he is quickly eliminated; the only person he accidentally shoots is himself.

• He is the oldest and tallest member of the circus. • He, Zooble, Orbsman, their evil counterparts, Martha Mildenhall, Wormo and the mannequins are some of the few who do not have mouths. • Despite not having a mouth, Kinger can still eat. • He's been in the Circus longer than any other character, which Jax believes is the reason he's the most psychologically unstable of them all. Even Zooble thinks Kinger would have been the first to shut down because of his paranoia. • It is possible that Kinger has been in the Circus since 1995. • He had a pillow fort, which Kinger called his "impenetrable fortress", in which he hid for protection. • Since his hands are not connected to his body, he can separate them indefinitely. • He seems to associate tall, shiny things with beauty and, by extension, with Queenie, since when he sees the Angel for the first time, he opens his eyes wide instead of being scared and says, "You look beautiful, darling." • Although he touched the abstract Queenie, Kinger had no problem with his hand. This could imply that the members of the abstract circus only cause people to malfunction when they are angry, or perhaps it was a mistake. • Kinger knows how to play chess. • He spent 7 years studying computer science. He has a collection of insects and is interested in them, as the mention of insects prompted him to leave his shelter. It is later revealed that this was something his wife had instilled in him due to her own interest in entomology. • Kinger uses the shotgun with his left hand. This shows that he is left-handed. • Kinger has said that he has played Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, two popular games from the 1990s that became the basis for first-person shooter (FPS) games, again suggesting that, at least in video games, he is proficient at shooting.

Ragatha's appearance resembles that of a living rag doll, with yarn-red hair, black eyebrows, a flat, reddish-orange triangular nose, and one blue button eye. She wears a long blue dress with darker blue patches sewn on. She wears a white underdress with a collar and a large bow in her hair that matches her dress. She also has a light beige skin tone and a black pupil in her real eye with pink eyelids and dark red lips. Her feet are designed with black squares on the bottom to resemble shoes.

Ragatha is described as "the sweetest little optimist." However, this optimism isn't as simple as it seems, as she gives the impression of forcing a constantly cheerful attitude to avoid losing her sanity, downplaying serious injuries and other grave incidents. Gangle mentioned that, over time, Ragatha's optimism can seem insincere. Jax also points out that Ragatha seems to try too hard and sometimes gives the impression that she's trying to take advantage of people.

She also seems forgiving, showing understanding for Pomni's reasons for abandoning her when she fled the Abstracted Kaufmo. She does have a limit, but she usually hides it to avoid conflict.

Ragatha often gets hurt in various ways, but since she's a doll, she can ignore the pain and even laugh at it. Even so, she wants to avoid getting hurt and gets annoyed when other characters (like Jax) try to harm her, such as when they're chasing the gummy bandits in Candy Canyon, where Jax urges Gangle to ram the bandits' spiked truck, causing Gangle to inadvertently crash into the spikes that impale Ragatha. However, she wasn't injured, and the wound later appeared to heal.

Ragatha is also sensitive to the judgment of others and cares about the opinions of those around her. This is evident in the adventure in the Candy Kingdom, where Ragatha tells Kinger that she doesn't think Pomni likes her very much. Or when they worked at Spudsy, when a Ragatha, intoxicated by the stupid sauce, tells Jax that, although she hates him, she doesn't want him to hate her. Ragatha's attitude of pleasing and forgiving everyone can be interpreted as a manifestation of her fear of being rejected or ungrateful, and of emotional pain in general.

During her conversation with Kinger, she revealed that at first she was scared and paranoid, just like Pomni, and that she had to cope in order to accept her new home.

Ragatha's insecurities, stemming from the trauma inflicted by her authoritarian mother and her deep fear of being hated and unable to form friendships, become more apparent. However, when Kinger (who has temporarily regained her sanity) comforts her and offers advice, Ragatha begins to be less hard on herself. Later, when they confront Pomni, the two reconcile their differences and their bond strengthens.

• Her name is a combination of "Rag Doll" and the feminine name "Agatha". • She mentioned that petting kittens is one of the things that makes her happy. • Ragatha has been in the circus the second longest time after Kinger. • Ragatha's only real fear is her fear of centipedes (chilopodophobia), which Jax loves to maliciously exploit. • Ragatha would say things she doesn't necessarily mean if she believes it will ease tensions. • Ragatha likes horses. • She owned horses before she got trapped in the circus. • Ragatha knows how to play the cello. • Ragatha can see through her button eye. • Ragatha is the only character who has a nose. • Ragatha copes with stressful situations by internalizing them. • When she holds her breath, her hair stands on end comically. • When Jax tells his "origin story," making a joke and referencing Breaking Bad, Ragatha appears confused and seemingly unaware of the show. Ironically, Ragatha joined the circus in October 2008, while Breaking Bad premiered in January of that same year. • Ragatha seems to have kept Spudsy's stupid sauce, as in the team adventure, Zooble asks Ragatha if she still has it. • He is the second person, after Caine, to speak directly to Bubble.

Their world is run by the eccentric AI Caine, a master of ceremonies with human minds — including newcomer Pomni; the mischievous troublemaker Jax; the cheerful optimist Ragatha; the emotionally fragile Gangle; the grumpy Zooble; and the paranoid veteran Kinger — trapped in The Amazing Digital Circus, a virtual reality game run by a quirky but clueless artificial intelligence named Caine and his enthusiastic assistant Bubble, where the possibilities are almost endless... almost.

The only rules of the Circus are no swearing, no participating in adult content, and, most importantly and unfortunately of all: absolutely no leaving.

The group embarks on all sorts of wacky, often unintentionally traumatic, misadventures as they try to hold on to what little sanity they have left, or else something terrible will happen to them.

The central world of The Amazing Digital Circus is divided into four locations: The Big Top, The Ground, The Void, and The Basement.

Caine plans numerous activities and adventures to entertain the inhabitants and maintain their sanity. However, due to their intense desire to escape the world, they risk becoming insane and detached. Caine has the ability to transport people and create portals to other worlds within the game.

Pomni, taking the form of a red and blue jester, is the last human and the most recent addition to the Digital Circus. Initially tense and nervous, she gradually adjusted to her new situation, adopting a more apathetic and cynical perspective, and becoming somewhat sarcastic about Caine's adventures, while also growing more involved with the gang.

Jax is a skinny, lilac rabbit with a monotone voice. He wears light pink overalls and yellow gloves. He is mischievous (sometimes bloodthirsty), cheeky, and arrogant.

Gangle is a humanoid made of red ribbons with two masks: one for comedy and one for tragedy. Gangle's emotions and behavior are influenced by the mask he wears. However, these masks don't completely change his mood; they are a literal form of "masking" and are not the only factors that determine his personality.

Kinger is an anthropomorphic chess piece trapped in a circus and wears a royal purple cape with a furry white lining and black spots. Kinger is erratic and paranoid, likely due to his time in the circus. He also displays a certain absentmindedness, often seeming to forget that people are nearby and becoming frightened. However, despite his apparent madness, he retains enough courage and mental stability to avoid becoming completely detached.

Zooble appears to be a shape-shifting toy with interchangeable parts. Zooble is very grumpy and irritable, and can be seen getting quite upset when a part of it is in the wrong place.

Ragatha is a rag doll with red hair, a blue dress, and a button eye. Ragatha is described as "the sweetest optimist." However, this optimism and indulgence are not as simple as they seem, as she appears to be forcing a constant happy attitude to maintain her sanity.

—Kaufmo: Before he was abstracted and became a great violent monster, Kaufmo was a friendly clown who seemed to get offended when people didn't find his jokes funny.

—Queenie: She was Kinger's wife, and part of the first group of humans to enter the digital circus; she was a black chess piece of the queen.

• Ribbit: It is implied that Ribbit was Jax's best friend before they became abstracted; she was a green frog who seemed to share Jax's mischievous behavior.

• Scratch: He was the first human in the circus to become abstracted, and presumably the one who created Caine.

Caine (Creative Artificial Intelligence Network Entity): He is a charismatic, goofy, and enthusiastic AI who runs the Digital Circus and sends human souls on adventures to maintain their sanity. Despite his good intentions of creating "fun" activities for players, these can sometimes cause more harm than good.

Bubble is an AI created by Caine to be his assistant, or pet. It's a bubble with sharp teeth and a squeaky voice. It's a strange creature, with a somewhat erratic and occasionally brazen approach to commitment.

The Gloinks: They are possibly the most recurring NPCs in Caine's adventures, either as minor antagonists or as background characters.

Queen Gloink: She considers herself superior to everyone and believes that everyone should be Gloink, even God.

Gummigoo: He was the antagonist (who later became an ally) in the adventure "Chaos, Trucks, and Candy," a bandit gummy crocodile. He and his gang steal syrup from the candy cannon in the Candy Kingdom. But when Pomni tries to take him to the digital circus, Caine kills him instantly.

Chad and Max: They are Gummigoo's gummy alligator companions.

Princess Loolilalu: She is the princess of the Candy Canyon Kingdom.

Fudge: He was the guardian of the Candy Kingdom's moat before being banished by Princess Loolilalu for eating too many citizens.

Angel/"The Creature": He is a messenger of God who was beheaded and hung on a wall by Baron Mildenhall after driving him insane. He chased Kinger and Pomni during the adventure "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor at the 'AAAAA' door," an exclusive for Zoobles, but Jax intentionally pushed Kinger and Pomni inside.

Baron Mildenhall: After murdering his own wife, mistaking her for the Angel, he committed suicide. He tricked Pomni and Kinger into shooting the Angel, intending to drag their souls to Hell for his own gain, all at the "AAAAA" gate.

Martha Mildenhall: She was Baron Mildenhall's wife and held no grudge against him. She invited Ragatha and Gangle over for tea, while Jax was tied up and gagged in a corner by the all-ages "WoW" gate, as they waited for Kinger and Pomni.

Ghostly: He is a ghost in Mildenhall Manor who would try to explain to the group which door to use, introducing the "WoW" and the "AAAAA", before being sucked into a vacuum cleaner by Jax.

Orbsman: A humanoid collection of spheres that speaks in an almost incomprehensible voice.

"The Disappearing Guy": It is a reddish-colored NPC mannequin that disappears shortly after starting a sentence.

Ming: A light blue NPC mannequin with bulging eyes and a blue cap, created to warn against the act of assuming. It was only created for a joke by Caine.

"Abel": an NPC mannequin created to pass as an ancient human, manipulates the others into believing that escape is possible, but in the end it is revealed that he is another of Caine's NPCs for a "special" adventure, unaware that he might be poorly received by the group.

• Evil: The "Evils" are distorted versions of the circus members, except for Gangle who is replaced by Evil Orbsman — having the mocking and rude Evil Pomni; the shy and nervous Evil Jax; the refined and arrogant Evil Ragatha; the tough and firm Evil Orbsman; the strict and demanding Coach Dictator (Evil Kinger), and the clueless and silly Bazooble (Evil Zooble) — created by Caine for "A Softball Game!!"
