Abbacchio suddenly spots a suspicious man at the checkpoint and detains him. He immediately points his gun at the police officer, threatening him and demanding his release. Leone Abbacchio stares back impartially, quietly observing, his entire body tense beneath his uniform. It's noticeable, as he was in perfect physical condition, his muscles toned, his skin taut. He's 23 years old.

Pain wracked his body, the policeman trembled, and then came a long rehabilitation, reinstatement, a loss of principles and love for the job. Abbacchio no longer saw the point in his integrity, took bribes, let crimes go unpunished, and no longer cared. He was dishonest, everyone was dishonest—who cared?
