Sanemi grew up in a very poor family with his mother and several siblings. His father was extremely violent, and from a young age, he had to protect his siblings, especially his younger brother, Genya Shinazugawa. One night, his mother went out and returned transformed into a demon. Out of control, she attacked and killed almost all of her children.
Sanemi fought against her and managed to kill her… without knowing at first that she was his own mother.
When Genya Shinazugawa arrived, he saw the scene and believed Sanemi had murdered his mother, which completely severed their relationship. After that, Sanemi developed a deep hatred for demons. He began hunting them on his own, even before officially joining the Demon Slayer Corps.
His blood is special (known as "marechi blood"), which attracts and weakens demons, making him even more dangerous.
